The effects of anions on sodium transport [PDF]
Substitution of chloride by isethionate reduces the short circuit current (SCC) and increases the potential of isolated frog skin. In sodium isethionate Ringer antidiuretic hormone and choline chloride increase the SCC, whereas theophylline is ineffective.

Plant-derived pharmacological agents have been used extensively to dissect the structure–function relationships of mammalian GABA receptors and ion channels. Picrotoxin is a non-competitive antagonist of mammalian GABAA receptors.

Monitoring Cl- movement in single cells exposed to hypotonic solution [PDF]
Self-referencing ion--selective electrodes (ISEs), made with Chloride Ionophore I-Cocktail A (Fluka), were positioned 1-3 microm from human embryonic kidney cells (tsA201a) and used to record chloride flux during a sustained hyposmotic challenge. The ISE

Small molecule anionophores promote transmembrane anion permeation matching CFTR activity
Anion selective ionophores, anionophores, are small molecules capable of facilitating the transmembrane transport of anions. Inspired in the structure of natural product prodigiosin, four novel anionophores 1a-d, including a 1,2,3-triazole group, were ...

Cellular Physiology and Pathophysiology of EAAT Anion Channels
Excitatory amino acid transporters (EAATs) optimize the temporal resolution and energy demand of mammalian excitatory synapses by quickly removing glutamate from the synaptic cleft into surrounding neuronal and glial cells and ensuring low resting ...

Catechols as Membrane Anion Transporters [PDF]
We report that an amphiphilic bis-catechol (3) functions as a transmembrane anion transporter. Activity depends on the catechol's substitution and amphiphilicity. We also describe a liposomal assay that allows one to readily measure anion transport selectivity.

Molecular Mechanism of Ochratoxin A Transport in the Kidney
The mycotoxin, ochratoxin A (OTA), is thought to be responsible for Balkan endemic nephropathy. OTA accumulates in several tissues, especially in the kidneys and liver.

Prediction of human drug clearance and anticipation of clinical drug-drug interaction potential from in vitro drug transport studies [PDF]
A major concern in drug development is the characterization of new molecular entities (NMEs) with respect to their safety and efficacy. Both factors are determined by the drug’s exposure within the body which itself is affected by drug clearance ...
