The calcium‐activated chloride channel (CaCC) TMEM16A enables chloride secretion across several transporting epithelia, including in the airways. Additional roles for TMEM16A have been proposed, which include regulating mucus production and secretion and

Disulfide Bond Connectivity and Oligomeric State of Anoctamin-1 [PDF]
TMEM16A(a)/anoctamin-1 (Ano1) has been identified as a Ca-activated chloride channel. Using blue native PAGE, SDS-PAGE and chemical cross-linking, we have shown that the mouse Ano1 channel (mAno1) shares an obligate homodimeric architecture with the hCLC-1 channel (Fallah et al. Molecular & Cellular Proteomics 10.1074/mcp. M110.004697, 2011).

MicroRNA-9 downregulates the ANO1 chloride channel and contributes to cystic fibrosis lung pathology
Downregulation of the anoctamin 1 calcium channel in airway epithelial cells contributes to pathology in cystic fibrosis. Here the authors show that microRNA-9 targets anoctamin 1 and that inhibiting this interaction improves mucus dynamics in mouse ...

Chloride – The Underrated Ion in Nociceptors
In contrast to pain processing neurons in the spinal cord, where the importance of chloride conductances is already well established, chloride homeostasis in primary afferent neurons has received less attention.

Anoctamin-1 is induced by TGF-β and contributes to lung myofibroblast differentiation.
This study describes a novel mechanism of differentiation of human lung fibroblasts (HLFs) to myofibroblasts: the key process in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) drives the expression of calcium-activated chloride channel anoctmin-1 (ANO1) leading to an increase in intracellular levels of chloride. The latter

The Transmembrane member 16A (TMEM16A), also known as anoctamin-1 (ANO1), is a calcium-activated chloride channel present in the airway epithelium. It is known to be involved in the apical chloride secretion indicating that TMEM16A could be addressed for

Presynaptic Localization and Possible Function of Calcium-Activated Chloride Channel Anoctamin 1 in the Mammalian Retina. [PDF]
Calcium (Ca(2+))-activated chloride (Cl(-)) channels (CaCCs) play a role in the modulation of action potentials and synaptic responses in the somatodendritic regions of central neurons. In the vertebrate retina, large Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) currents (ICl(
