Pyrazole‐Derived Antibacterial Compounds Effectively Treat Methicillin‐Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Infections by Inhibiting Aspartate Transcarbamoylase

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study unveils a novel antibacterial mechanism against MRSA, in which the compound Py‐27 selectively targets and inhibits aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase), a key enzyme in pyrimidine synthesis. This inhibition disrupts DNA replication, induces oxidative damage, leading to potent bactericidal activity.

Evolution of malaria virulence in cross-generation transmission through selective immune pressure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Theoretical arguments and some mathematical models of host-parasite coevolution (e.g. [1- 6]) suggest host immunity as the driving source for the evolution of parasite virulence.

Programmable Encapsulation Enables On‐Demand Proliferation of Therapeutic Bacteria for Potent Cancer Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A programmable encapsulation technology is developed to reduce bacterial immunogenicity and proliferation after systemic administration. The cross‐linked polymer networks around individual bacteria enable immunogenic shielding and permit selective proliferation in tumors, allowing the bacteria to convert tumor‐accumulated ammonia into L‐arginine and ...

Orientin mediates protection against MRSA-induced pneumonia by inhibiting Sortase A

open access: yesVirulence, 2021
Drug-resistant pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) has severely threatened human health and arouses widespread concern. Sortase A (SrtA) is an essential virulence factor of S.

Evolutionary trade-offs underlie the multi-faceted virulence of Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Date of Acceptance: 20/07/2015Bacterial virulence is a multifaceted trait where the interactions between pathogen and host factors affect the severity and outcome of the infection. Toxin secretion is central to the biology of many bacterial pathogens and

Integrated Single‐Cell and TCR Profiling Reveals Protection‐Associated CD8+ T Cell Subsets Linked to Viral Control in PRRSV

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
PRRSV vaccine‐mediated protection is associated with clonally expanded cytotoxic CD8+ T cell subsets driven by viral structural proteins and supported by innate TLR4/TLR8 signaling and CD4+ T cell help, whereas non‐protective responses are characterized by dysfunctional exhausted‐like CD8+ T cells linked to poor viral control.

Anti-biofilm and anti-virulence effects of zerumbone against Acinetobacter baumannii

open access: yesMicrobiology, 2020
Acinetobacter baumannii is a multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen that affects patients with a compromised immune system and is becoming increasingly important as a hospital-derived infection. This pathogen is difficult to treat owing to its

Characterization of natural product inhibitors of quorum sensing reveals competitive inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa RhlR by ortho-vanillin

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-cell signaling system that enables bacteria to coordinate population density-dependent changes in behavior. This chemical communication pathway is mediated by diffusible N-acyl L-homoserine lactone signals and cytoplasmic ...

Linoleic acid acts as a potential anti-virulence agent in Klebsiella pneumoniae. [PDF]

open access: yesGerms
The rise in antimicrobial resistance among bacterial pathogens is a global concern, and anti-virulence therapy may be an alternative strategy to address the issue. Multidrug resistant (MDR) hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (HvKp) is known to be associated with healthcare associated infections.

The Natural Product Corramycin Acts as a DNA Gyrase Poison and Overcomes Fluoroquinolone Resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Corramycin, a myxobacterial natural product antibiotic, exhibits potent bactericidal activity against multidrug‐resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The compound hijacks bacterial transporters such as BacA and OppABCD to enter the cell and inhibits DNA synthesis through a previously unrecognized mode of DNA gyrase poisoning, locking the enzyme in an ...
