Genome-Wide Transposon Screen of a Pseudomonas syringae mexB Mutant Reveals the Substrates of Efflux Transporters. [PDF]
Bacteria express numerous efflux transporters that confer resistance to diverse toxicants present in their environment. Due to a high level of functional redundancy of these transporters, it is difficult to identify those that are of most importance in ...

Genetic Determinants of Intrinsic Antibiotic Tolerance in Mycobacterium avium
The Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is one of the most prevalent causes of nontuberculous mycobacteria pulmonary infection in the United States, and yet it remains understudied.

Glyphosate affects persistence and tolerance but not antibiotic resistance
Abstract Glyphosate is a herbicide widely used in food production that blocks the synthesis of aromatic amino acids in plants and in microorganisms and also induces the accumulation of the alarmone (p)ppGpp. Resistance, tolerance and persistence to antibiotics are common phenomena that contribute to antibiotic treatment failure.

Antibiotic tolerance, or the ability of bacteria to survive antibiotic treatment in the absence of genetic resistance, often involves a low metabolic state. Here, Zheng et al. show that tolerance does not readily evolve against antibiotics whose efficacy

A Dietary Source of High Level of Fluoroquinolone Tolerance in mcr-Carrying Gram-Negative Bacteria
The emergence of antibiotic tolerance, characterized by the prolonged survival of bacteria following antibiotic exposure, in natural bacterial populations, especially in pathogens carrying antibiotic resistance genes, has been an increasing threat to ...

Antibiotic tolerance: targeting bacterial survival
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing is the cornerstone of antibiotic treatments. Yet, active drugs are frequently unsuccessful in vivo and most clinical trials investigating antibiotics fail. So far, bacterial survival strategies, other than drug resistance, have been largely ignored.

Tolerability of moxifloxacin in patients with antibiotic hypersensitivity
Allergic reactions to antibiotics are commonly reported in the clinical practice. The treatment of antibiotic hypersensitivity (AH) consists of suggesting to avoid the offending antibiotics and to use safe alternatives after performing oral provocation tests (OPT). Moxifloxacin is a new fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent with a broad spectrum activity.

Equine or porcine synovial fluid as a novel ex vivo model for the study of bacterial free-floating biofilms that form in human joint infections [PDF]
Bacterial invasion of synovial joints, as in infectious or septic arthritis, can be difficult to treat in both veterinary and human clinical practice.

This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Persisters show heritable phenotype and generate bacterial heterogeneity and noise in protein expression [PDF]
Persisters are a small subpopulation of bacteria that survive a lethal concentration of antibiotic without antibiotic resistance genes. Isolation of persisters from normally dividing population is considered difficult due to their slow growth, low ...
