Natural antimutagenic agents

Mutation Research/Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, 1996
Following a brief review of recent discoveries in the field of natural antimutagenic and tumor chemopreventive agents, contemporary findings in the author's laboratories employing the direct acting mutagen, ethyl methanesulfonate, in modified Ames tests and eukaryotic murine FM3A mammary tumor cells modified to be subject to thymidine-less death are ...

Antimutagenicity in yeast

Mutation Research - Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, 1992
In recent years there has been increasing interest in antimutagenesis, and studies have been done using both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. In eukaryotic systems the first studies were performed with different strains of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. In particular, caffeine and L-methionine were investigated.

Antimutagenic activity of spearmint

Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis, 2004
AbstractThe antimutagenic activity of spearmint (Mentha spicata), a popular food flavoring agent, was studied in the Salmonella assay. Spearmint leaves were brewed in hot water for 5 min at concentrations up to 5% (w/v), and the water extracts were tested against the direct‐acting mutagens 4‐nitro‐1,2‐phenylenediamine (NPD) and 2‐hydroxyamino‐3‐methyl ...

Antimutagenic effects of mushrooms

Mutation Research - Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, 1990
A heat-resistant factor in ethanol extracts of the fungus Craterellus cornucopioides completely inhibited the mutagenicity of aflatoxin B1, benzo[a]pyrene, the acridine half mustard ICR-191 and 2-nitrofluorene in a forward-mutation system using Salmonella typhimurium TM677 (screening for 8-azaguanine resistance).

Antimutagenic Activity of Lipidovit

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2004
Antimutagenic properties of Lipidovit produced from the biomass of Blakeslea trispora fungi was studied by its effect on induction of chromosome aberrations by chemical mutagens dioxidine and cyclophosphamide in mouse bone marrow cells. Antimutagenic activity of Lipidovit depended on the scheme of treatment.

Antimutagens from Momordica charantia

Mutation Research - Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, 1990
The antimutagenic principle of the green fruits of Momordica charantia was shown by the micronucleus test to be an intractable mixture of novel acylglucosylsterols. The antimutagens were extracted from the green fruits with ethanol and isolated from the bioactive petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride extracts by repeated and sequential flash column ...

Antimutagenicity in Euglena gracilis

Mutation Research Letters, 1994
The genotoxic effect of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and furadantine (Fu) was significantly decreased by standard antimutagens (ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, chlorophyllin and sodium selenite) in the unicellular flagellate Euglena gracilis. The effects of these compounds were verified also by a bacterial test in which three strains of

Antimutagenicity of propionic acid bacteria

Mutation Research - Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis, 1991
The antimutagenicity of the cell extracts of Propionibacterium shermanii VKM-103, P. pentosaceum CCM 1859 and P. acnes CCM 3322 against mutagenicity of sodium azide and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine was demonstrated for the first time. The extracts of propionic acid cocci didn't show such effect.

Antimutagenic Properties of Green Tea

Plant Foods for Human Nutrition, 2005
In this work biological effects of two common kinds of green tea (Chinese Gunpowder and Japanese Sencha) were analyzed using three independent tests of antimutagenicity: 1) the Ames test with Salmonella typhimurium TA98, 2) cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes (CAPL), and 3) test with Saccharomyces cerevisiae D7.

Plant Antimutagenic Agents, 2. Flavonoids

Journal of Natural Products, 1988
A number of known prenylated flavonoids were isolated from Psoralea corylifolia using an assay procedure based on inhibition of the mutagenic action of 2-aminoanthracene on Salmonella typhimurium (T-98). All of these compounds were toxic rather than antimutagenic or desmutagenic.
