Effect of antioxidants and exercise on bone metabolism
Journal of Sports Sciences, 2008We examined the effects of antioxidant supplementation in association with progressive aerobic training on the bone metabolism of healthy elderly individuals. For 8 weeks, 13 participants (mean age 74 years) received vitamin C (500 mg) and vitamin E (100 mg) daily and participated in a supervised progressive aerobic training programme.

Antioxidants, metabolic rate and aging in Drosophila
Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, 1982In line with the (metabolic) rate-of-living theory of aging, previous work from this laboratory showed that the life-prolonging effect of the antioxidant thiazolidine carboxylic acid (TCA) in Drosophila was paralleled by a similar reduction of the oxygen consumption rate of the flies. To assess the generality of this phenomenon, several life-prolonging

Metabolism of Phenolic Antioxidants
2021This chapter provides an insight into the metabolism of dietary phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds are consumed in the form of foods, which are modified to form new compounds with potential health benefits. The in-vitro metabolism of the different classes of phenolic compounds has been discussed. The in-vivo metabolism consists of bioaccessibility,

The Potential Role of Antioxidants in Metabolic Syndrome
Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2016Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a constellation of risk factors that raise the risk for heart disease and other health problems, such as obesity. The clustering of metabolic abnormality is closely related to oxidative stress and inflammation, as well as the progression of atherosclerosis. Antioxidants are reducing agents which inhibit the oxidation of other

Prevention of cataracts by nutritional and metabolic antioxidants
Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, 1995Among aging disabilities, the one associated with the progressive decline of vision is functionally most disadvantageous. Cataracts are one of the more common causes of such visual disability. Several predisposing factors have been identified in the genesis of this disease.

Metabolic aspects of antioxidants and preservatives
Xenobiotica, 1986The use of chemical preservatives serves to ensure the nutritional adequacy, palatability and safety of processed foods and beverages. The toxicity of some of the more ubiquitous antimicrobial agents (sorbic acid, p-hydroxybenzoates, sulphur dioxide) and antioxidants (propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT] is ...

Prospects for the use of antioxidant pharmacopuncture in metabolic syndrome
Voprosy kurortologii, fizioterapii i lechebnoi fizicheskoi kul'tury, 2020The purpose of the study was to further reveal the mechanisms and therapeutic capabilities of the pharmacopuncture method (the introduction of drugs into the area of reflexotherapy points) in metabolic syndrome. In previously published materials on the problem, we pointed out the efficacy of the pharmacopuncture antioxidant Ubiquinone Composite (as a ...

Antioxidants and carcinogen metabolism
Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, 1982Abstract Supplementation of diet with synthetic antioxidants has been shown to protect animals against a broad spectrum of chemical carcinogens. Some interest has been expressed in the use of these food additives as possible prophylactic agents. However, such considerations appear premature in view of the fact that the protective mechanism has not yet

Metabolic Studies on the Antioxidant Ethoxyquin

Abnormalities of Antioxidant Metabolism in a Case of Friedreich's Disease
Clinical Neuropharmacology, 1996We report a patient with Friedreich's disease (FD) who exhibited abnormalities of antioxidant metabolism, including decreased levels of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and selenium, and an increased lipid peroxide index. These abnormalities became normal after treatment with N-acetylcysteine, selenium, and low-dose vitamin E therapy ...
