APOBEC-Mediated Editing of Viral RNA

Science, 2004
Retroviral DNA can be subjected to cytosine-to-uracil editing through the action of members of the APOBEC family of cytidine deaminases. Here we demonstrate that APOBEC-mediated cytidine deamination of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) virion RNA can also occur.

Biochemical assays for AID/APOBECs and the identification of AID/APOBEC inhibitors

Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) and apolipoprotein B-mRNA editing catalytic polypeptide 3 (APOBEC3 or A3) proteins belong to the AID/APOBEC family of cytidine deaminases. While AID mediates somatic hypermutation and class-switch recombination in adaptive immunity, A3s restrict viruses and retroelements by hypermutation.

The crystal structure of APOBEC-2 and implications for APOBEC enzymes

2015
APOBEC-2 (Apo2) belongs to the Apolioprotein B (APOB) mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide (APOBEC) family of cytidine deaminases that modify genes by deaminating cytosines in mRNA coding sequences and cytidines in ssDNA (Franca et al., 2006). APOBEC deaminases have remarkably diverse functions comprising antibody maturation, inactivation of viral

DNA Editing by APOBECs: A Genomic Preserver and Transformer

Trends in Genetics, 2016
Information warfare is not limited to the cyber world because it is waged within our cells as well. The unique AID (activation-induced cytidine deaminase)/APOBEC (apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide) family comprises proteins that alter DNA sequences by converting deoxycytidines to deoxyuridines through deamination.

APOBEC deaminases-mutases with defensive roles for immunity

Science in China Series C: Life Sciences, 2009
In recent years, tremendous progress has been made in the elucidation of the biological roles and molecular mechanisms of the apolioprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide (APOBEC) family of enzymes. The APOBEC family of cytidine deaminases has important functional roles within the adaptive and innate immune system.

The current structural and functional understanding of APOBEC deaminases

Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 2009
The apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide (APOBEC) family of cytidine deaminases has emerged as an intensively studied field as a result of their important biological functions. These enzymes are involved in lipid metabolism, antibody diversification, and the inhibition of retrotransposons, retroviruses, and some DNA viruses.
