Αναλύονται τα κίνητρα του αναχωρητισμού, ο ίδιος ο πνευματικός αγώνας, τα μέσα τα οποία χρησιμοποιούσαν, αλλά και οι αρετές που κατακτούσαν και τα πάθη εναντίον των οποίων μάχονταν.
