Runtime and aPTT predict venous thrombosis and thromboembolism in patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a retrospective analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care, 2016
Background Even though bleeding and thromboembolic events are major complications of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), data on the incidence of venous thrombosis (VT) and thromboembolism (VTE) under ECMO are scarce.

Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 40 mg/day of atorvastatin in reducing the severity of sepsis in ward patients (ASEPSIS Trial) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Introduction: Several observational studies suggest that statins modulate the pathophysiology of sepsis and may prevent its progression. The aim of this study was to determine if the acute administration of atorvastatin reduces sepsis progression in ...

Bioabsorbable Endovascular Adhesive Tape (BEAT) for Improving Vascular Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A bioabsorbable endovascular adhesive tape (BEAT) platform based on a hierarchical polyelectrolyte complex is developed to enhance drug delivery in the DCB system. The coating enables rapid transfer to the vessel, provides short‐term mechanical support, and promotes both immediate transfer and long‐term retention of drugs at the lesion site.

Mucin‐Inspired Filamentous Sulfated Copolymers Effectively Inhibit Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (hRSV) Infectivity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Virucidal polymers serve as effective antivirals by not only inhibiting viruses but also destroying them. Inspired by the chemical properties of mucin‐mimetics, dendronized polyglycerol‐sulfated, mucin‐inspired amphiphilic copolymers (MIACPs) have been developed.

C-reactive protein: associations with haematological variables, cardiovascular risk factors and prevalent cardiovascular disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
C-reactive protein (CRP) has been proposed as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, this association is confounded by mutual relationships with both classical and haematological cardiovascular risk factors. We, therefore, measured CRP with a

Elevated Factor VIII Levels and Shortened APTT in Recurrent Abortions.

open access: yesJournal of clinical and diagnostic research : JCDR, 2016
INTRODUCTION Thrombotic disorders have been found to be associated with recurrent abortions. Several risk factors have been identified. APTT reflects the common pathway and intrinsic pathway of coagulation cascade and hence is a good marker for ...

Endothelial Cell‐Specific Molecule‐1 (ESM1): An Endogenous Anticoagulant and Protective Factor in Venous Thrombosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies ESM1 as an endogenous anticoagulant that modulates venous thrombosis. It shows that ESM1 deficiency triggers vascular occlusion in zebrafish and mice, whereas its restoration or overexpression prolongs clot‐formation time. Mechanistic analyses reveal that ESM1 activates HCII through its dermatan‐sulfate chain, uncovering a ...
