Argument Mining Using Argumentation Scheme Structures

open access: yes, 2016
Argumentation schemes are patterns of human reasoning which have been detailed extensively in philosophy and psychology. In this paper we demonstrate that the structure of such schemes can provide rich information to the task of automatically identify complex argumentative structures in natural language text.

Arguing from Definition to Verbal Classification: The Case of Redefining 'Planet' to Exclude Pluto

open access: yesInformal Logic, 2008
The recent redefinition of 'planet' that excludes Pluto as a planet led to controversy that provides a case study of how competing scientific definitions can be supported by characteristic types of evidence.

On The Construction of Capacity-Achieving Lattice Gaussian Codes

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper, we propose a new approach to proving results regarding channel coding schemes based on construction-A lattices for the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel that yields new characterizations of the code construction parameters, i.e.,

Argumentative Scheme for Abduction

open access: yesDiscourse, 2023
Introduction. The paper scrutinizes abduction through the lens of the argumentation theory. Abduction is treated as an argument with a special argumentative scheme. Argumentation schemes are seen as stereotypical patterns of common types of arguments used in everyday discourse.

An "all-poles" approximation to collinear resummations in the Regge limit of perturbative QCD

open access: yes, 2005
The procedure to improve the convergence in transverse momentum space of the NLL BFKL kernel using a w-shift is revisited. An accurate approximation to this shift only depending on transverse momenta is presented.

Comparing the Argumentum Model of Topics to Other Contemporary Approaches to Argument Schemes: The Procedural and Material Components [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This paper focuses on the inferential configuration of arguments, generally referred to as argument scheme. After outlining our approach, denominated Argumentum Model of Topics (AMT, see Rigotti and Greco Morasso 2006, 2009; Rigotti 2006, 2008, 2009), we

Abductive, presumptive and plausible arguments

open access: yesInformal Logic, 2001
Current practice in logic increasingly accords recognition to abductive, presumptive or plausible arguments, in addition to deductive and inductive arguments. But there is uncertainty about what these terms exactly mean, what the differences between them
