On spontaneous asymmetric synthesis
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1953Abstract The kinetic equations of growth of symmetrically mutually antagonistic self-reproducing systems are considered and shown to lead to instability. It follows that spontaneous asymmetric synthesis is a natural property of life: a laboratory demonstration is not necessarily impossible.

Magnetochirality-Induced Asymmetric Synthesis
ChemPhysChem, 2001Magnetochiral anisotropy, the combined effect of a collinear arrangement of a magnetic field B and the wave vector k of a light beam--as illustrated in the picture--has been proven to produce an enantiomeric excess in a chemical reaction, to make this effect a likely candidate for the origin of the homochirality of life.

This chapter focuses on asymmetric synthesis. It begins by discussing chirality. A laboratory synthesis of a chiral compound from achiral or racemic starting materials alone always gives a racemic mixture of enantiomers. If we want to make just one enantiomer, we have to use a starting material or reagent which is also just one enantiomer.

Abstract This book covers a wide range of reactions which are of importance in the asymmetric synthesis of organic compounds. The principles of asymmetric additions to carbonyls, enolate alkylation, aldol reactions, additions to C-C double bonds, reduction and oxidation, rearrangements, and hydrolysis/ esterification reactions are ...

The manufacture of fine chemicals, particularly drugs, fragrances, and flavors, is undergoing a major revolution now as a result of the capability of chemists to prepare these chemicals, mainly drugs, in their purest isomeric forms (as stereoisomers). This shift to pure forms has been described by Brown in the following words (1990) (see also Deutsch ...
