The putative proteinase maturation protein A of Streptococcus pneumoniae is a conserved surface protein with potential to elicit protective immune responses [PDF]
Surface-exposed proteins often play an important role in the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and their host. We isolated a pool of hydrophobic, surface-associated proteins of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Autolysin(s) of Bacillus subtilis as Dechaining Enzyme [PDF]
Bacillus subtilis bacteria grow exponentially as long filaments in well-aerated cultures at 48 C. These filaments are chains of cells which can become unlinked when a B. subtilis autolysin or egg white lysozyme is added to the culture medium.

Synthesis and evaluation of troponoids as a new class of antibiotics [PDF]
Novel antibiotics are urgently needed. The troponoids [tropones, tropolones, and α-hydroxytropolones (α-HT)] can have anti-bacterial activity. We synthesized or purchased 92 troponoids and evaluated their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus ...

Rapid Methods for Extracting Autolysins from Bacillus subtilis [PDF]
Two procedures are described for the extraction of autolysins from whole cells. One method uses 5 M LiCl at 4 C. The amount of enzyme obtained by this method is six times more than that obtained by autolysis of cell walls and fourteen times more than that obtained by extracting cell walls with LiCl.

Anti-staphylococcal humoral immune response in persistent nasal carriers and noncarriers of Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]
BACKGROUND. Persistent carriers have a higher risk of Staphylococcus aureus infections than noncarriers but a lower risk of bacteremia-related death. Here, the role played by anti-staphylococcal antibodies was studied. METHODS.

Coordination of Autolysins during cell division in Caulobacter crescentus

The Induction of Meningeal Inflammation by Components of the Pneumococcal Cell Wall [PDF]
Pneumococcal cell wall induces meningeal inflammation in rabbits injected intracisternally with >105 cell equivalents. Both of the major cell wall components, teichoic acid and peptidoglycan, contribute to this inflammatory activity although responses ...

Anchoring of proteins to lactic acid bacteria [PDF]
The anchoring of proteins to the cell surface of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) using genetic techniques is an exciting and emerging research area that holds great promise for a wide variety of biotechnological applications. This paper reviews five different
