DNA ejection from bacteriophage: towards a general behavior for osmotic suppression experiments [PDF]

open access: yesThe European Physical Journal E 24 (2007) 9-18, 2007
We present in this work in vitro measurements of the force ejecting DNA from two distinct bacteriophages (T5 and lambda) using the smotic-suppression technique. Our data are analyzed by revisiting the current theories of DNA packaging in spherical capsids.

Bacteriophage translocation [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Immunology & Medical Microbiology, 2006
The occurrence of phages in the human body, especially in the gastrointestinal tract, raises the question of their potential role in the physiology and pathology of this system. Especially important is the issue of whether phages can pass the intestinal wall and migrate to lymph, peripheral blood, and internal organs and, if so, the effects such a ...

Successful treatment of antibiotic resistant poly-microbial bone infection with bacteriophages and antibiotics combination.

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2019
A patient with a trauma-related left tibial infection associated with XDR Acinetobacter baumannii and MDR Klebsiella pneumoniae was treated with bacteriophages and antibiotics. Tissue healing and eradication of positive cultures were rapidly observed. As

Diversity of Sinorhizobium (Ensifer) meliloti Bacteriophages in the Rhizosphere of Medicago marina: Myoviruses, Filamentous and N4-Like Podovirus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Using different Sinorhizobium meliloti strains as hosts, we isolated eight new virulent phages from the rhizosphere of the coastal legume Medicago marina.

Genome landscapes and bacteriophage codon usage [PDF]

open access: yesLucks JB, Nelson DR, Kudla GR, Plotkin JB (2008) Genome Landscapes and Bacteriophage Codon Usage. PLoS Computational Biology 4(2): e1000001, 2007
Across all kingdoms of biological life, protein-coding genes exhibit unequal usage of synonmous codons. Although alternative theories abound, translational selection has been accepted as an important mechanism that shapes the patterns of codon usage in prokaryotes and simple eukaryotes.

Spreading dynamics of an infection in a growing population [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Bacteriophages spreading through populations of bacteria offer relatively simple, tuneable systems for testing mathematical models of range expansion. However, such models typically assume a static state into which to expand, which is not generally valid for bacterial-bacteriophage populations, where both the host (bacteria) and the infectious agent ...

Bacteriophages as Alternatives to Antibiotics in Clinical Care

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2019
Antimicrobial resistance is increasing despite new treatments being employed. With a decrease in the discovery rate of novel antibiotics, this threatens to take humankind back to a “pre-antibiotic era” of clinical care. Bacteriophages (phages) are one of

ΦCrAss001 represents the most abundant bacteriophage family in the human gut and infects Bacteroides intestinalis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
peer-reviewedCrAssphages are an extensive and ubiquitous family of tailed bacteriophages, predicted to infect bacteria of the order Bacteroidales. Despite being found in ~50% of individuals and representing up to 90% of human gut viromes, members of this

Application of bacteriophages [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology Australia, 2017
The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and decrease in the discovery rate of novel antibiotics takes mankind back to the ‘pre-antibiotic era' and search for alternative treatments. Bacteriophages have been one of promising alternative agents which can be utilised for medicinal and biological control purposes in agriculture and related fields ...
