Improving protein extraction and peptide production from Chlorella vulgaris using combined mechanical/physical and enzymatic pre-treatments

open access: yesHeliyon
Chlorella vulgaris is a microalga rich in proteins with potential applications in food and feed industries. However, the presence of a cellulose-containing cell wall, which is a major barrier to protein extraction, together with fibroproteinaceous ...

Upcycling Keratin‐Based Textile Waste Into High‐Performance Hybrid Fibers Via Tuning the Interfacial Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Keratin recovered from animal‐hair textile waste is fractionated and blended with cellulose to produce continuously spun hybrid fibers. Selecting the high‐molecular‐weight keratin fraction enables 30 wt.% keratin incorporation while maintaining high strength in dry and wet states.

Covalent Functionalization of 2D Semiconductors: A Roadmap to Advanced Electronic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Review presents recent advances in the covalent functionalization strategies for two‐dimensional semiconductors and their implementation in modern technologies. Layered materials are modified through diverse molecular chemistries (e.g., thiols, diazonium salts, alkyl halides, and electron‐deficient species) to tailor their surface properties ...

Dispersion of Agglomerated Nanoparticles by Fine Beads Mill

open access: yesJournal of the Society of Powder Technology, Japan, 2004
In a dispersion of agglomerated nanoparticle to primary particles by a beads mill, large-sized beads give excess impulsive power to the agglomerated nanoparticles, resulting in crushing and reagglomeration of particles. In this study, a bead mill with fine-sized beads (down to 0.03mm) was developed and the dispersion performance for agglomerated ...

An Adaptive Inhibitory WSe2 Transistor for Retinomorphic In‐Sensor Image Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Conventional retinomorphic devices typically require deliberate gate‐bias tuning for each illumination condition. In this paper, we demonstrate an adaptive inhibitory WSe2 transistor that uses photo‐induced regime shift between the subthreshold and accumulation modes to achieve decision‐free, intensity‐adaptive image processing within a single pixel ...

Hybrid Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions with Intrinsic Nonlinearity and Self‐Rectification via Interfacial Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Rapid thermal annealing reconstructs the BCFO/Nb:STO interface into an atomically thin reconstructed interfacial layer, which reshapes the tunneling barrier and converts a high‐TER ferroelectric tunnel junction into an intrinsically nonlinear, self‐rectifying device.

Nitride MXenes Beyond Carbides: Bridging the Gap Between Computational Prediction and Experimental Realization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nitride MXenes remain constrained by a persistent gap between computational prediction and experimental realization. This Review identifies the thermodynamic, kinetic, and chemical barriers limiting their synthesis, critically evaluates emerging fabrication routes, and proposes a multidimensional computational‐experimental framework to accelerate the ...

Intracrystalline Void‐Mediated Toughening of Brittle Crystals in Quail Eggshells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In quail eggshells, the high density and disordered arrangement of intracrystalline voids inhibit lattice cleavage, suppress long‐range crack propagation, and promote deformation twinning and quasi‐plasticity, serving as an essential toughening motif. We show that these voids remain within a narrow subcritical size range and therefore predominantly do ...

Mechanochemistry via Bead-milling: an Emerging Tool Towards Greener and Scalable Organic Synthesis

open access: yesCHIMIA
Mechanochemistry has emerged as a powerful approach to reduce solvent consumption, improve process mass intensity (PMI), and access enhanced reactivity under highly concentrated or solvent-free conditions.

Prostate Cancer Patient‐Derived Organoids (PDOs) as Functional Avatars for Antisense Oligonucleotide (ASO)‐Based Personalized Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Prostate patient‐derived organoids (PDOs) were established from TURP and biopsy specimens with >90% success and retain key features of their tissues of origin, making them functional avatars for antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) therapy . Transfecting single cells outside the Matrigel matrix and then reconstituting organoids overcomes the 3D delivery ...
