Soft Ionic and Electronic Triboelectric Nanogenerators: Toward Attachable and Implantable Biomedical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review provides an overview of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)–based biomedical applications by classifying studies into electronic and ionic systems across attachable and implantable platforms. It summarizes key material choices, device structures, and working mechanisms that characterize current TENG‐based research, and outlines six future ...

Salt-Responsive Metabolite, β-Hydroxybutyrate, Attenuates Hypertension

open access: yesCell Reports, 2018
Summary: Dietary salt reduction and exercise are lifestyle modifications for salt-sensitive hypertensives. While exercise has prominent metabolic effects, salt has an adverse effect on metabolic syndrome, of which hypertension is a hallmark.

Engineering New‐to‐Nature Biological Pathways for β,γ‐Alkanediol Synthesis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
β,γ‐Alkanediols are value‐added chemicals to be used as functional solvents, biofuels, and cosmetic components. This work demonstrates a carboligation‐mediated approach for synthesis of linear chain β,γ‐alkanediols in Escherichia coli, namely, hexane‐2,3‐diol (2,3‐HDO) and pentane‐2,3‐diol (2,3‐PDO). The engineered E. coli cells produce 152.2 mm (17.98

Serum Beta Hydroxybutyrate Concentrations in Cats with Chronic Kidney Disease, Hyperthyroidism, or Hepatic Lipidosis

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2016
Background Ketones, including beta hydroxybutyrate (BHB), are produced in conditions of negative energy balance and decreased glucose utilization.

Combining Electrochemical Reduction with Biosynthesis for Directed Conversion of CO2 into a Library of C3 Chemicals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In the H‐type electrolytic cell, carbon dioxide is reduced to acetic acid via electro‐microbial catalysis. The simply processed acetic acid is further converted through biological fermentation into high‐value‐added products, including acrylic acid, L‐lactic acid, and β‐alanine.

Lipid specificity of beta-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase activation.

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1975
Beef heart mitochondrial beta-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase forms a catalytically active complex with lecithin and is inactive in the absence of lecithin. The specificity of the activation process was probed by studying the interaction of the enzyme with phospholipids and other compounds.

Cytosolic Phosphoenoylpyruvate Carboxykinase Deficiency: Clinical, Biochemical, and Genetic Features of Five Non‐Finnish Patients

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cytosolic phosphoenoylpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK‐C) is an essential, rate‐limiting enzyme in the gluconeogenesis pathway. PEPCK‐C deficiency presents with hypoglycaemia, hyperlactataemia and hepatopathy, and was first reported in association with bi‐allelic PCK1 variants in 2014.

Medium-Chain Fatty Acids, Beta-Hydroxybutyric Acid and Genetic Modulation of the Carnitine Shuttle Are Protective in a Drosophila Model of ALS Based on TDP-43

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2018
ALS patients exhibit dyslipidemia, hypermetabolism and weight loss; in addition, cellular energetics deficits have been detected prior to denervation. Although evidence that metabolism is altered in ALS is compelling, the mechanisms underlying metabolic ...

Environmental Enrichment and Estrogen Upregulate Beta-Hydroxybutyrate Underlying Functional Improvement

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2022
Environmental enrichment (EE) is a promising therapeutic strategy in improving metabolic and neuronal responses, especially due to its non-invasive nature. However, the exact mechanism underlying the sex-differential effects remains unclear.

Salt‐Responsive Metabolite, beta‐Hydroxybutyrate, Attenuates Hypertension

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2019
Dietary salt reduction and exercise are lifestyle modifications for salt‐sensitive hypertensives. While exercise has prominent metabolic effects, salt has an adverse effect on metabolic syndrome, of which hypertension is a hallmark. We hypothesized that dietary salt impacts metabolism in a salt‐sensitive model of hypertension.
