A Panel of Bile Volatile Organic Compounds Servers as a Potential Diagnostic Biomarker for Gallbladder Cancer

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2022
As no reliable diagnostic methods are available, gallbladder cancer (GBC) is often diagnosed until advanced stages, resulting in a poor prognosis. In the present study, we assessed whether volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could be used as a diagnostic ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Quantitation of cholesterol-carrying particles in human gallbladder bile

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1998
The inter-mixed micellar/vesicular (non-phospholipid-associated) bile salt concentration (IMC) can be rapidly measured in model biles by centrifugal ultrafiltration, thus allowing reliable separation of vesicular and micellar cholesterol carriers by gel ...

Tumor mutational burden as a determinant of metastatic dissemination patterns

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of genomic data to elucidate whether metastasis in certain organs share genetic characteristics regardless of cancer type. No robust mutational patterns were identified across different metastatic locations and cancer types.

Nexus between renewable energy and agricultural productivity in Somalia: Evidence from Fragile Foundations

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture
Somalia has considerable land deterioration due to soil erosion and deforestation. These environmental stresses reduce agricultural productivity. Despite these challenges, the nation has renewable energy sources that haven’t been used yet.

Overexpression of estrogen receptor α increases hepatic cholesterogenesis, leading to biliary hypersecretion in mice

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2006
We explored whether there is an “estrogen-ERα-SREBP-2” (for estrogen-estrogen receptor subtype α-sterol-regulatory element binding protein-2) pathway for regulating hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis in ovariectomized AKR mice treated with 17β-estradial ...

Bile Acids in Porcine Fetal Bile.

open access: yesBiological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 2000
A study of the biliary bile acid composition in porcine fetus compared with that of the adult pig is described. Biles, collected during gestation (weeks 4, 15 to 17 and at birth), aged six months and two years old, were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography and capillary GC-MS. Bile acids were separated into different conjugate groups by chromatography

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/time-of-flight mass spectrometry based bile and urine metabonomics study on the ameliorative effects of Curcuma wenyujin rhizoma on acute blood stasis in rats

open access: yesWorld Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2022
Background: Curcuma wenyujin rhizome (CWR) is a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine for treating blood stasis in China for 1000 of years. However, the underlying mechanism of CWR remains unclear.

Identification of serum protein biomarkers for pre‐cancerous lesions associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This work identified serum proteins associated with pancreatic epithelial neoplasms (PanINs) and early‐stage PDAC. Proteomics screens assessed genetically engineered mice with abundant PanINs, KPC mice (Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐KrasG12D/+ Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐Trp53R172H/+ Pdx1‐Cre) before PDAC development and also early‐stage PDAC patients (n = 31), compared to benign ...
