Red knots (Calidris canutus islandica) manage body mass with dieting and activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Mass regulation in birds is well documented. For example, birds can increase body mass in response to lower availability and/or predictability of food and decrease body mass in response to increased predation danger.

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Altered body mass regulation in male mPeriod mutant mice on high-fat diet

open access: yes, 2012
The circadian clock orchestrates most physiological processes in mammals. Disruption of circadian rhythms appears to contribute to the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Predator escape tactics in birds: linking ecology and aerodynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In most birds, flight is the most important means of escape from predators. Impaired flight abilities due to increased wing loading may increase vulnerability to predation.

Effect of Cold Temperature and Food Restriction on Energy Metabolism and Thermogenesis in Eothenomys miletus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Stress Physiology & Biochemistry, 2014
The aim of the present study was to examine the energy strategy in response to the cold temperature and food shortage. The survival rate, body mass, body fat content, serum leptin levels, basal metabolic rate (BMR) and nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) as

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

The Relationship of Vitamin D Status with Body Mass Index among Obese Adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Aim: In this study, we aimed to determine vitamin D levels among obese adults and to investigate its relationship with body mass index (BMI). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of obese adult patients who were admitted to Hasköy

The Super Size of America: An Economic Estimation of Body Mass Index and Obesity in Adults [PDF]

open access: yes
The increased prevalence of obesity in the United States stresses the pressing need for answers as to why this rapid rise has occurred. This paper employs micro-level data from the First, Second, and Third National Health and Nutrition Examination ...

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.
