Investigating genome reduction of Bordetella pertussis using a multiplex PCR-based reverse line blot assay (mPCR/RLB) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
BACKGROUND: The genetic composition of the bacterium causing whooping cough, Bordetella pertussis, has been investigated using microarray studies in order to examine potential genetic contributors to the disease re-emergence in the past decade.

Rebound of Respiratory Virus Activity and Seasonality to Pre‐Pandemic Patterns

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT The emergence of SARS‐CoV‐2 and the implementation of non‐pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) profoundly disrupted the transmission dynamics of respiratory viruses, altering their epidemiology and seasonality. However, comprehensive long‐term data on these shifts and their post‐pandemic implications remain limited.

Expression of pertussis toxin in Bordetella bronchiseptica and Bordetella parapertussis carrying recombinant plasmids [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1989
Pertussis toxin is produced only by strains of Bordetella pertussis. Cloned genes encoding pertussis toxin from B. pertussis were transferred into Bordetella bronchiseptica and Bordetella parapertussis by conjugation. These transconjugants expressed pertussis toxin at levels comparable to those expressed by B. pertussis. The toxin made by these strains

Saliva and Anterior Nasal Samples for Detecting Respiratory Viruses in Children

open access: yesAPMIS, Volume 133, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT For detecting respiratory viruses, a nasopharyngeal swab sample for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays has been the benchmark. Less discomfort related to sampling is requested especially for children, and thus other sample types have been suggested.

Molecular typing ofBordetella parapertussisisolates circulating in Pakistan [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Immunology & Medical Microbiology, 2011
Although a whole-cell pertussis vaccine was introduced in Pakistan in 1980, little is known about the pertussis prevalence and circulating strains in Pakistan. The aim of this study was to analyze Bordetella parapertussis isolates circulating between 2005 and 2009 in Pakistan and to compare them with those found in other countries during different ...

Epidemiology and Burden of Human Metapneumovirus Among Italian Adults in Outpatient and Inpatient Settings, 2014–2025

open access: yesInfluenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, Volume 19, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) has been increasingly recognized as a major contributor to respiratory infections in all age groups. Owing to its recent discovery, available data on the burden of hMPV in adults are still scant and heterogeneous.

Comparison of Bordetella species identification among differing rt-PCR assays in the United States

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
In the United States, the general laboratory method for diagnosing pertussis, caused by Bordetella pertussis, is real-time PCR (rt-PCR) targeting insertion sequence 481 (IS481).

The Role of Bordetella Infections in Patients with Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
: Background: : Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB) are associated with a variety of viral and bacterial infectious agents, some of which are potentially preventable by immunization. Bordetella pertussis, which causes whooping cough, has not

Predicting the Proteins of Angomonas deanei, Strigomonas culicis and Their Respective Endosymbionts Reveals New Aspects of the Trypanosomatidae Family [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Endosymbiont-bearing trypanosomatids have been considered excellent models for the study of cell evolution because the host protozoan co-evolves with an intracellular bacterium in a mutualistic relationship.

Outer Membrane Vesicles as a Versatile Platform for Vaccine Development: Engineering Strategies, Applications and Challenges

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are nanosized vesicles naturally secreted by Gram‐negative bacteria and represent a promising platform for vaccine development. OMVs possess inherent immunostimulatory properties due to the presence of pathogen‐associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), providing self‐adjuvanting capabilities and the ability to ...
