M. E. Grant Duff, Philosophic Liberalism and the Global Liberal Cause

open access: yesHistory, EarlyView.
Abstract Historians disagree about how best to conceptualize nineteenth‐century British Liberalism in relation to its international contexts. This article argues that we can better understand the patterns involved by interrogating individuals who bridged the worlds of partisan politics and elaborated thought.

Can prisons move people into better jobs? A look at correctional vocational training programs and sectoral employment outcomes

open access: yesCriminology, EarlyView.
Abstract Three‐quarters of US prisons offer vocational training programs, which aim to place trainees in middle‐skills jobs in specific occupational sectors post‐release. These middle‐skills jobs may more effectively reduce recidivism than the jobs that normally characterize the labor market experience of the formerly incarcerated, yet whether ...

Adaptive neural network cascade control system with entropy-based design [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A neural network (NN) based cascade control system is developed, in which the primary PID controller is constructed by NN. A new entropy-based measure, named the centred error entropy (CEE) index, which is a weighted combination of the error cross ...

Driven by risk: Understanding reference‐dependent preferences using simulated auto racing

open access: yesJournal of Risk and Insurance, EarlyView.
Abstract Using data from over 56,000 simulated auto races worldwide, we analyze risk‐taking at the margins, consistent with reference‐dependent preferences. We show that participants' risk‐taking changes when a desired intermittent outcome is presented, sometimes at the expense of a more favorable expected end state.

Study and comparison of non linear and LPV control approaches for vehicle stability control [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
International audienceThis paper proposes a study and a comparison between two efficient and novel vehicle control dynamics strategies, namely, the non linear Flatness control strategy and the LPV/Hinf control strategy.

Jumping on the moon as a potential exercise countermeasure

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Moon's gravitational field strength (17% Earth's gravity) may facilitate the use of bodyweight jumping as an exercise countermeasure against musculoskeletal and cardiovascular deconditioning in reduced gravity settings. The present study characterised the acute physiological and kinetic responses to bodyweight jumping in simulated Lunar ...

Development of nonlinear real-time intelligent controllers for anti-lock braking system (ABS) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The objective of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is to control the wheel slip to maximize the friction coefficient between the wheel and the road, irrespective of the road surface and condition.

Increases in skin perfusion and blood oxygen in the non‐exercising human limbs during exercise in the heat: Implications for control of circulation

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Blood flow in the inactive limb tissues and skin is widely thought to decline during incremental exercise to exhaustion due to augmented sympathoadrenal vasoconstrictor activity, but direct evidence to support this view is lacking. Here, we investigated the inactive‐forearm haemodynamic (Q̇forearm${\dot{Q}}_{\mathrm{forearm}}$) and oxygenation
