Icariin has the potential to induce the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into brown fat cells via PDE5A inhibition

open access: yesHeliyon, 2023
Background: Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) possess the ability of adipogenic differentiation. Icariin (ICA) is a prenylated flavonol glycoside with diverse pharmacological activities and has been reported to promote osteogenic ...

How brown is brown fat? It depends where you look [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Although it is now accepted that adult humans possess active brown adipose tissue, it has been questioned whether this is genuine classical brown adipose tissue.

Stress Prompts Brown Fat into Combustion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Activation of dorsomedial hypothalamic-rostral medullary raphe neural signaling promotes brown fat thermogenesis, leading to elevated body temperature. In this issue, Kataoka et al.

Iron chelation increases beige fat differentiation and metabolic activity, preventing and treating obesity

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Beige and brown fat consume glucose and lipids to produce heat, using uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). It is thought that full activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) may increase total daily energy expenditure by 20%.

Brown and beige adipose tissue regulate systemic metabolism through a metabolite interorgan signaling axis

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Beige and brown fat may influence systemic metabolism through secreted signals. Here the authors identify a panel of metabolites secreted from beige and brown fat cells, which signal to influence fat tissue and skeletal muscle metabolism and have anti ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Brown adipose tissue and glucose homeostasis – the link between climate change and the global rise in obesity and diabetes

open access: yesAdipocyte, 2019
There is increasing evidence that the global rise in temperature is contributing to the onset of diabetes, which could be mediated by a concomitant reduction in brown fat activity.

A New Twist on Brown Fat Metabolism [PDF]

open access: yesCell, 2009
The transcriptional coactivator PGC-1alpha promotes mitochondrial biogenesis and thermogenic programs in brown adipose tissue. Pan et al. (2009) identify the transcription factor twist-1 as a negative feedback regulator of PGC-1alpha.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Saturated: a study in fat obsession [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This thesis examines both contemporary and historical meanings surrounding human body FAT in order to illuminate, chiefly, the forces that have rendered it both an omnipresent and negative entity in Western societies.
