Hemagglutinins in brown seaweeds

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1986
Abstract Twenty-eight brown seaweeds contain agglutinins that show activity against animal and human erythrocytes. Three brown seaweeds are described whose hemagglutinic activity has not been previously reported: Ectocarpus confervoides, Giffordia granulosa and Cutleria multifida.

Particulate organohalogens in edible brown seaweeds

Food Chemistry, 2019
Brown algae, rich in antioxidants and other bioactive compounds, are important dietary seaweeds in many cultures. Like other marine macroalgae, brown seaweeds are known to accumulate the halogens iodine and bromine. Comparatively little is known about the chemistry of chlorine in seaweeds.

Carbohydrates of the brown seaweeds

Carbohydrate Research, 1974
Abstract Mannitol, sucrose, and laminitol have been isolated from ethanolic extracts of the brown seaweed Desmarestia aculeata and characterised, and rhamnose, sedoheptulose, glucose, fructose, and 2- O -methyl- and 3- O -methyl-fucose have been identified by their chromatographic mobilities and g.l.c. retention times. Laminarin, alginic acid, and “

Brown Seaweed Extracts (Alginates)

2022
Alginates, or algin, is a generic term for the salts and derivatives of alginic acid. This acidic polysaccharide or gum occurs as the insoluble mixed calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium salt in the Phaeophyceae, brown seaweeds. Brown seaweed has been used as a food for centuries but the discovery of algin did not occur until about 1880.

Conservation genomics of a critically endangered brown seaweed

Journal of Phycology, 2021
Seaweeds provide valuable ecosystem services, but many are undergoing global decline due to climate and anthropogenic stressors. The brown macroalga, Nereia lophocladia (hereafter called Nereia), is among only a handful of seaweeds globally to be listed as critically endangered and is only described from two known locations, but there exists little ...

Antioxidant Activity of Brown Seaweeds

Journal of Aquatic Food Product Technology, 2016
ABSTRACTAntioxidant potential of three brown seaweeds, Anthophycus longifolius, Sargassum plagiophyllum, and Sargassum myriocystum, obtained from the Gulf of Mannar region of India were evaluated utilizing different in vitro systems. Ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of Anthophycus longifolius registered significantly greater hydroxyl radical scavenging ...
