Bufadienolides from the Venom of and Their Enzyme Inhibition Activities and Brine Shrimp Lethality

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2018
A new bufadienolide named dyscinobufotalin ( 1 ), along with twenty known bufadienolides ( 2–21 ) were isolated from the venom of Bufo bufo gargarizans . Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis.

The role of fluorescence polarization immuno-assay in the diagnosis of plant-induced cardiac glycoside poisoning livestock in South Africa

open access: yesOnderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research, 2005
Poisoning with cardiac glycoside-containing plants is collectively the most important plant-associated poisoning of livestock in southern Africa. As a diagnosis of this significant poisoning is currently based on circumstantial evidence, a practical ...

Potential Health Risks Posed by Plant-Derived Cumulative Neurotoxic Bufadienolides in South Africa

open access: yesMolecules, 2016
Bufadienolide-type cardiac glycosides have a worldwide distribution and are mainly synthesized by plants, but there are also animal sources. In South Africa, members of three genera of the Crassulaceae (Cotyledon, Tylecodon and Kalanchoe) cause a unique ...

A new bufadienolide from Bufo gargarizans Cantor

open access: yesNatural Product Research
Bufo gargarizans Cantor (B. gargarizans) is the most widely distributed and abundant species of toad in China. Bufadienolides and indole alkaloids have cardiotonic and anti-tumor activities and are important pharmacological components of B.

Effect of exposure to deltamethrin on the bufadienolide profiles in Bufo bufo gargarizans venom determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry

open access: yesRSC Advances, 2019
The population of Bufo bufo gargarizans Cantor in China has been alarmingly declining due to environmental pollution. Deltamethrin is a pyrethroid pesticide frequently used in agriculture and much of its residues are present in crops, soil and water ...

Integrating mass spectrometry and systems biology for the modernization of natural medicines: From deciphering chemical complexity to holistic efficacy assessment

open access: yesVIEW, Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2026.
This review explores how mass spectrometry is transforming research in natural medicines, with Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a primary exemplar. It details the application of advanced mass spectrometry in chemical analysis, the development of comprehensive quality control methods, and systematic research on the targeted mechanisms of single ...

Combinatorial chemistry in toad: a protoxin self-resistance way to its own bufadienolide toxin

open access: yes, 2020
1. Toxin resistance in all taxa is important for their survival. Resistance to bufadienolide toxin is mediated by molecular changes to the sodium-potassium-pump.

Ouabain‐induced hypertension in rats: Mechanisms, variability and translational implications

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 3, Page 653-673, 1 March 2026.
Abstract Ouabain‐induced hypertension is a multifactorial and condition‐dependent phenomenon involving coordinated actions across vascular, renal and central nervous system pathways. At the vascular level, ouabain inhibits Na⁺/K⁺‐ATPase, particularly the α2‐isoform, leading to elevated intracellular Ca2⁺, enhanced vasoconstriction and structural ...
