Managing Clostridium difficile infection in hospitalised patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Checklists are not a new phenomenon and have been used in the aviation industry for some time as a means of ensuring safety and minimising harm. Checklists are now used commonly in health care to improve patient safety.

Competitive SELEX Strategy for High‐Affinity Aptamer Isolation and Enhanced Biosensing

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
A novel competitive SELEX strategy was developed to isolate high‐affinity aptamers by using a lower‐affinity competitor during the selection process. This approach enabled the identification of an aptamer with exceptional binding affinity, significantly improving target detection sensitivity.

Prevalence of toxigenic Clostridium difficile in hospitalized patients in the southwestern province of Saudi Arabia: Confirmation using the GeneXpert analysis

open access: yesLibyan Journal of Medicine
Clostridium difficile (Clostridioides difficile) is a leading cause of nosocomial infections in hospitalized patients worldwide. Stool samples were collected from 112 inpatients admitted to different hospitals and were screened for C.

Two‐Dimensional Materials For Lateral Flow Assays: A Critical Review of Functional Roles and Translational Challenges

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
2D nanosheets, with large surface area, excellent optical/electrical properties, and high specificity, combine with lateral flow assay strips to enable rapid, readable detection, boosting the strips’ development and applications. Abstract Lateral flow assays (LFAs) are widely used for point‐of‐care diagnostics, but their detection capability remains ...

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Methods currently applied to study the prevalence of Clostridioides difficile in foods

open access: yes, 2020
Clostridioides difficile is responsible for most cases of antibiotic- and hospital-associated diarrhoea. Several studies have demonstrated the presence of C.

Strategies for enhancing sensitivity in lateral flow assays

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Lateral flow assays (LFAs) are essential for cost‐effective, rapid point‐of‐care diagnostics. However, conventional colourimetric LFAs often lack the sensitivity required for low‐abundance biomarkers. This review evaluates six enhancement strategies: flow modulation, sample preconcentration, advanced reporters, chemical signal amplification, structural

Patient Safety and Organisational Accountability: Reassessing Criminal Liability Frameworks in Healthcare

open access: yesThe Modern Law Review, EarlyView.
Serious harm in healthcare often results from systemic failures, yet criminal accountability remains largely addressed through homicide law, gross negligence manslaughter and health‐and‐safety offences, frameworks that emphasise individual culpability and are ill‐suited to addressing organisational failings.

Clostridioides difficile concentration-dependant alterations in gut microbiota of asymptomatic infants

open access: yesGut Pathogens
Background Asymptomatic carriage of Clostridioides difficile is highly prevalent in early infancy, affecting approximately 40% of infants. This phenomenon offers a unique opportunity to study its impact on the gut microbiota without the confounding ...

Microbiome Insights Into Zoonotic Risk at Wildlife–Human Interfaces in a Transitioning Landscape in Thailand

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study shows how ecological transitions, such as reforestation in Southeast Asia, reshape host–microbe–pathogen dynamics at the wildlife–domestic interface. By integrating long‐read microbiome sequencing, ecological gradients, and statistical and network analysis, we identify host species that disproportionately contribute to pathogen diversity and
