Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of Carbohydrate Hydrolyzing Enzymes by Underutilized Parts From Some Plant‐Based Foods and Their Effect on Postprandial Hyperglycemia

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, Volume 2, Issue 2, Page 285-294, June 2026.
The underutilized parts viz: pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels showed promising antioxidant and inhibition of α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase activities (IC50 values ≤ 100 μg/mL). Similarly, pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels reduced postprandial hyperglycemia in sucrose‐ and maltose‐induced hyperglycemia in rats.

Functional Bread From Bambara Groundnut and Orange Peel Attenuates Hyperglycemia and Oxidative Stress in a High‐Fat Diet/Streptozotocin‐Induced Type 2 Diabetes Rat Model

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, Volume 2, Issue 2, Page 211-221, June 2026.
This study evaluated Bambara groundnut–wheat composite bread fortified with orange peel in diabetic rats. Diets significantly lowered blood glucose, inhibited α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase, and boosted antioxidant enzymes compared to controls. Results emphasize BG‐based functional foods' potential to help manage type 2 diabetes through regulation of ...

Exploring Floristic Diversity and Medicinal Plant Uses in Venda, Limpopo, South Africa

open access: yesFeddes Repertorium, Volume 137, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Plants have been an important source of medicine for thousands of years. To better understand the current diversity and usage of medicinal plants, floristic studies are essential. This report documents an expedition conducted in the Venda region of Limpopo, South Africa. The study was carried out in Shanzha and surrounding villages, as well as

Polygonati Rhizoma Attenuates Oxidative Stress‐Induced Senescence in Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
Network pharmacology identified the potential targets and pathways of Polygonati Rhizoma (PR) against aging‐related periodontitis through PPI, GO/KEGG enrichment, and molecular docking. Experimental validation in a D‐galactose‐induced senescence model of periodontal ligament stem cells showed that PR‐medicated serum attenuated cellular senescence and ...

Gallic Acid‐Mediated Enhancement of Diazepam‐Induced Sedation via GABAA Receptor Modulation: In Vivo and In Silico Evaluation

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
Gallic acid (GA) dose‐dependently reduced sleep latency and prolonged sleep duration in thiopental sodium‐induced mice, with synergistic effects when combined with diazepam. Molecular docking revealed GA's higher binding affinity (−9.8 kcal/mol) to GABAA receptor (α1 and β2 subunits) than diazepam (−8.4 kcal/mol), suggesting GABAergic potential ...
