Properdin: binding to C3b and stabilization of the C3b-dependent C3 convertase. [PDF]
A function of P in the alternative complement pathway is to prolong the first order decay of the hemolytic sites on EAC43B in a dose-dependent manner. As the number of initial convertase sites is not changed, even when activated properdin (P) increases the t1/2 10-fold or more, P acts to stabilize rather than to uncover additional sites.

Trends in Ocean S‐Isotopes May Be Influenced by Major LIP Events
Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact
An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

The complement system is a part of the innate immune system, where it labels intruding pathogens as well as dying host cells for clearance. If complement regulation is compromised, the system may contribute to pathogenesis.

Accelerated decay of C3b to iC3b when C3b is bound to the Cryptococcus neoformans capsule [PDF]
Incubation of encapsulated and nonencapsulated Cryptococcus neoformans in normal human serum (NHS) leads to activation and binding of potentially opsonic fragments of complement component C3 to the yeast cells. Analysis of the molecular forms of C3 after incubation of encapsulated cryptococci in NHS showed that the percentage of bound C3 occurring as ...

Characterization of Binding Properties of Individual Functional Sites of Human Complement Factor H
Factor H exists as a 155,000 dalton, extended protein composed of twenty small domains which is flexible enough that it folds back on itself. Factor H regulates complement activation through its interactions with C3b and polyanions.

Hyperfunctional complement C3 promotes C5-dependent atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome in mice [PDF]
Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is frequently associated in humans with loss-of-function mutations in complement-regulating proteins or gain-of-function mutations in complement-activating proteins.
