The effect of boromycin on the Ca2+ homeostasis
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 2002A boron-containing antibiotic, boromycin (BM), was found to influence the Ca2+ homeostasis in both excitable and non-excitable cells. In non-excitable cells (human erythrocytes and leucocytes) it inhibited the resting passive 45Ca2+ transport in 10(-6)-10(-5) mol/L concentrations.

Ca2+ homeostasis and apoptosis
Electronic Journal of Pathology and Histology, 2000Despite many years of intensive studies, the role of intracellular calcium homeostasis in the regulation of cell death is still unclear and controversial. Partly, this is due to the lack of an understanding of cellular Ca2+ signaling processes in an integrated manner.

Alteration in Ca2+ homeostasis by a trauma peptide
Journal of Surgical Research, 1991Postinjury tissue inflammation with PMN elastase proteolysis generates immunosuppressive fibronectin peptides (FNDP) impairing chemotaxis, T-cell activation, and proliferation. Excess intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) impairs T-cell activation. This study quantifies the changes in [Ca2+]i following exposure to a degradation peptide of fibronectin to ...

Na+/Ca2+ Exchange and Cellular Ca2+ Homeostasis
Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, 1998The Na+/Ca2+ exchange system is the primary Ca2+ efflux mechanism in cardiac myocytes, and plays an important role in controlling the force of cardiac contraction. The exchanger protein contains 11 transmembrane segments plus a large hydrophilic domain between the 5th and 6th transmembrane segments; the transmembrane regions are responsible for ...

Endoplasmic Reticulum and the Control of Ca2+ Homeostasis
1993Control of Ca2+ homeostasis is one of the fundamental activities of eukaryotic cells. In the extracellular medium the concentration of the free ion is maintained in the millimolar range whereas in the cytosol the resting value is approximately four orders of magnitude lower, yet the total calcium content per cell amounts to several millimoles per liter.

Histamine modulation of Ca2+ homeostasis in human neutrophils
Journal of Leukocyte Biology, 1993Abstract The influence of histamine on the basal intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and agonist- induced increases of [Ca2+], was studied in Fura-2-loaded neutrophils. Histamine was unable to change the basal [Ca2+]i at concentrations (10−6-10-4 M) that have been shown to cause a rapid increase in [Ca2+]i in a variety of ...

The plasma membrane Ca2+ pump: Potential role in Ca2+ homeostasis
1992Plant cells, like those of other organisms, maintain the concentration of free Ca2+ in the cytoplasm in the submicromolar range, against a steep electrochemical gradient which would favour Ca2+influx into the cytoplasm from both the apoplast and endocellular compartments (Poovaiah and Reddy, 1987; Felle, 1989; Miller et al. 1990).

Ca2+ homeostasis in brain microvascular endothelial cells
2021Blood brain barrier (BBB) is formed by the brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMVECs) lining the wall of brain capillaries. Its integrity is regulated by multiple mechanisms, including up/downregulation of tight junction proteins or adhesion molecules, altered Ca2+ homeostasis, remodeling of cytoskeleton, that are confined at the level of BMVECs ...

Platelet Ca2+ Homeostasis: Na+-Ca2+ Exchange in Plasma Membrane Vesicles
Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 1987SummaryA vesicular plasma membrane-enriched fraction obtained from human platelets exhibited 45Ca2+ uptake in exchange for intravesicular Na+. The rate of Ca2+ uptake was linear up to 4 sec. The apparent Km for Ca2+ was 22 pM and the Vmax 280 pmol/mg/ sec. Ca2+ efflux from Ca2+ loaded vesicles was obtained upon dilution into a NaCl but not a KC1 medium.

Prompt Glycosylation of Calreticulin Is Independent of Ca2+ Homeostasis
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1994Selective glycosylation of "prompt" stress glycoproteins (P-SG), mainly P-SG67 and P-SG64 (M(r) of 64,000, pI = 5.1), occurs immediately during acute heat-stress. In the present study, P-SG64 was purified by sequential gel filtration, anion-exchange, affinity chromatography, and two-dimensional isoelectric focusing/SDS-PAGE. Purified P-SG64 was further
