SUMMARY Calcitonin, a polypeptide hormone secreted by the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid gland, lowers serum calcium by decreasing bone resorption and tubular calcium reabsorption. An analgesic action, possibly mediated via β‐endorphins, is also evident.
