Neurobehavioral effects of the calcium ionophore A23187
Neurotoxicology and Teratology, 1987The divalent cationic ionophore A23187 (calimycin) facilitates the transport of calcium ions across biological membranes, resulting in an increase of cytosolic calcium. A23187 has been used extensively in vitro to activate calcium-dependent neurocellular processes.

Ionophore-mediated calcium exchange diffusion in liposomes
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1980Abstract The exchange diffusion of 45 Ca in multilamellar liposomes containing the antibiotic ionophore A23187 is enhanced in a dose-related fashion at increasing concentrations of external Ca 2+ or at increasing A23187/lipid molar ratios. An increase in fluidity of the lipid bilayer augments the permeability to Ca by facilitating both the ...

Calcium Chelators and Calcium Ionophores
1988The preceding chapters in this volume have demonstrated that Ca ions play critical roles in the regulation of a very large number of physiologic, pharmacologic, and biochemical processes. In the study of these processes, it is invariably necessary to control and measure or monitor the free [Ca2+] with a high degree of precision. Many of these processes

Bilayers containing calcium ionophore A23187 form channels
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1992For the first time, based on bilayer membrane conductance experiments, it has been shown that A23187, a carboxylic calcium ionophore, incorporated in lipid bilayers gives single channel currents similar to the well known gramicidin channel. The current characteristics indicate the possibility that the transmembrane ion transport by this important ...

Calcium Antagonists and Ionophores
1985The delineation and quantitation of the sources and pathways of Ca2+ mobilized during excitation—contraction coupling in smooth muscle is a problem of both importance and complexity. It is now generally agreed that both intracellular and extracellular sources of Ca2+ are involved and that the relative extent of their involvement is dependent upon the ...

Histamine releasing action of calcium ionophore 985-I
Agents and Actions, 1988The polyether antibiotic 985-I induced histamine release from rat and mouse mast cells and human basophils. Histamine release induced by low concentrations (10-50 microM) of the ionophore was a selective (noncytotoxic) process. It was energy and Ca2+-dependent and was potentiated by glucose.

Ionophore‐based Heterogeneous Calcium Optical Titration
Electroanalysis, 2017AbstractRecently, the field of complexometric titration significantly progressed with the advent of ionophore‐based titration reagents. We present here for the first time an ionophore‐based heterogeneous optical titration method for calcium. The all‐in‐one reagent was composed of chromoionophore, ion‐exchanger and calcium ionophore in dichloromethane ...

Ionophorous properties of neutral diamide ligands toward calcium
Biochemistry, 1977The ability of a series of aromatic and alicyclic analogues of 1,2-ethylenedioxydiacetic acids bearing N,N,N',N'-tetra-n-propyl amide or N-methyl-N-carbethoxypentyl amide linkages to enhance the rate of 45Ca2+ efflux from vesicles was studied. The ligands were less potent in enhancing membrane permeability to Ca2+ than A23187 and X537A.

Characterization of chlortetracycline (aureomycin) as a calcium ionophore
Biochemistry, 1982The antibiotic chlortetracycline (aureomycin) is shown to be a potent and specific calcium ionophore. The molecule extracts calcium from an aqueous environment into a bulk organic phase in a pH-dependent manner and with a stoichiometry indicative of a 1:1 complex.

Superior prevention of calcium ionophore cataract by E64d
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Basis of Disease, 1992The purposes of this experiment were: (1), to compare effect of three E64 derivatives, E64, E64c and E64d in preventing nuclear opacity and proteolysis in calcium ionophore-induced cataract and (2), to measure the accumulation of E64 derivatives in the cultured lenses.
