Inhibition by verapamil of ionophore-mediated calcium translocation
Experientia, 1977Verapamil and other organic calcium-antagonists inhibit the A23187-mediated translocation of calcium from an aqueous into an organic phase.

Calcium Chelators and Calcium Ionophores
1988The preceding chapters in this volume have demonstrated that Ca ions play critical roles in the regulation of a very large number of physiologic, pharmacologic, and biochemical processes. In the study of these processes, it is invariably necessary to control and measure or monitor the free [Ca2+] with a high degree of precision. Many of these processes

Activation of porcine oocytes with calcium ionophore: Effects of extracellular calcium
Molecular Reproduction and Development, 1999The present study examined the mechanism of A23187-induced activation in pig oocytes, with special reference to the effects of extracellular calcium on oocyte activation. The following endpoints were evaluated: intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i), intracellular pH ([pH]i), cortical granule (CG) exocytosis, pronuclear formation, and ...

Calcium uptake by myometrial membranes: Effect of A 23187, a calcium ionophore
European Journal of Pharmacology, 1976A subcellular fraction, relatively enriched with plasma membranes, showed an ATP-dependent Ca2+ uptake. The addition of a Ca2+. Other drugs (angiotensin, prostaglandin F2alpha, 5-hydroxytryptamine and cyclic nucleotides) had negligible effects on Ca2+ transport. The preparation appears to transport Ca2+, although binding is negligible.

Calcium Antagonists and Ionophores
1985The delineation and quantitation of the sources and pathways of Ca2+ mobilized during excitation—contraction coupling in smooth muscle is a problem of both importance and complexity. It is now generally agreed that both intracellular and extracellular sources of Ca2+ are involved and that the relative extent of their involvement is dependent upon the ...

Superior prevention of calcium ionophore cataract by E64d
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Basis of Disease, 1992The purposes of this experiment were: (1), to compare effect of three E64 derivatives, E64, E64c and E64d in preventing nuclear opacity and proteolysis in calcium ionophore-induced cataract and (2), to measure the accumulation of E64 derivatives in the cultured lenses.

Ionophore-mediated calcium exchange diffusion in liposomes
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1980Abstract The exchange diffusion of 45 Ca in multilamellar liposomes containing the antibiotic ionophore A23187 is enhanced in a dose-related fashion at increasing concentrations of external Ca 2+ or at increasing A23187/lipid molar ratios. An increase in fluidity of the lipid bilayer augments the permeability to Ca by facilitating both the ...

Ionophore A23187, calcium and contractility in frog eggs
Experimental Cell Research, 1974Abstract Ionophore A23187 elicits rapid cortical contractions in frog eggs at 10 −6 M conc. in the presence or complete absence of extracellular calcium. Intracellular EDTA or EGTA inhibits contractility, suggesting the importance of intracellular calcium for the response.
