Developing heterospecific sterile insect technique for pest control: insights from the spotted wing fly Drosophila suzukii

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 81, Issue 9, Page 5214-5223, September 2025.
Irradiated Drosophila melanogaster males successfully court and mate with D. suzukii females and significantly reduce numbers of D. suzukii offspring under different species ratios. Abstract BACKGROUND Reproductive interference (i.e. sexual interaction between males of one species and females of another species that reduce the fitness of one or both ...

Selective pruning and crop removal increase early-season fruit production of carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.)

open access: yesScientia Horticulturae, 2000
Carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.) trees grow and bear fruit year-round in their native, tropical environment. Fruits of this species are borne mainly on the canopy periphery, and the delicate skin is easily damaged during windy conditions (wind-scar). Pruning, as well as fruit drop caused by strong winds, stimulates re-bloom of carambola trees.

Diversity and Activity Patterns of Medium‐Sized and Large Terrestrial Mammals in Agroforests of a Peruvian Amazon Rainforest Region

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2025.
We studied species richness and activity patterns of medium‐sized and large terrestrial mammals in agroforests located in the northern buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve, Peru. The agroforests harboured a high number of mammal species, with species richness increasing alongside greater structural complexity of vegetation.

Transcriptional response in larvae of the generalist fruit fly Anastrepha obliqua feeding on three different tropical host plants

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 173, Issue 7, Page 708-723, July 2025.
We investigated the molecular basis of host switching by the phytophagous West Indian fruit fly (A. obliqua). Third‐instar larvae showed differential gene expression according to host plants: red mombin, mango, and carambola. The main gene categories differentially expressed were digestion, detoxification, and gene regulators.
