Carbapenems are broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics that cover an absolute majority of all bacterial pathogens that possess a cell wall. The only clinically important exceptions are X. maltophilia, E. faecium, and some strains of methicillin-resistant staphylococci and penicillin-resistant pneumococci.
