Overvirw of Carbon Ion Radiotherapy at NIRS
The world-first clinical center offering carbon ion radiotherapy (C-ion RT) was set to open in 1994 at NIRS, Japan, using HIMAC. Among several types of ion species, carbon ions were chosen for cancer therapy because they were judged to have the most optimal properties in terms of superior physical and biological characteristics.

Sultams as Dual Inhibitors of Human Carbonic Anhydrase and Thioredoxin Reductase
A series of sultam‐based N‐acyl derivatives with potential applications as dual TrxR1 and CA inhibitors were synthesized and evaluated. TrxR1 screening identified several active compounds, with inhibitory potency influenced by the type and orientation of substituents.

Carbon ion radiotherapy at HIMAC-NIRS
In 1994, carbon ion radiotherapy was begun at the NIRS (National Institute of Radiological Sciences) using HIMAC (Heavy-Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba), which was the world's first heavy ion accelerator complex dedicated to medical use in a hospital environment.
