New Phytologist, EarlyView.Summary The Mesoproterozoic atmosphere had more CO2 and less O2 than at present. While the upper ocean was oxygenated, the deeper ocean was euxinic or ferruginous. Primary production was performed by Chlorobia, Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Archaeplastida.
