Bacterial purine metabolism modulates C. elegans development and stress tolerance via DAF‐16

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 292, Issue 11, Page 2771-2783, June 2025.
Purine metabolism is crucial for cellular function and is a conserved metabolic network from prokaryotes to humans, but remains poorly understood in metazoan. To investigate the impact of dietary components on purine metabolism and animal growth, we screened the effects of an Escherichia coli single‐gene deletion library on the growth of the nematode ...

From data to discovery: leveraging big data in plant natural products biosynthesis research

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 122, Issue 6, June 2025.
SUMMARY Plant natural products or specialized metabolites play a vital role in drug discovery and development, with many clinically important derivatives such as the anticancer drugs topotecan (derived from the natural alkaloid camptothecin) and etoposide (derived from the natural polyphenol podophyllotoxin).

Analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: An update for 2021–2022

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, Volume 44, Issue 3, Page 213-453, May/June 2025.
Abstract The use of matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry for the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates is a well‐established technique and this review is the 12th update of the original article published in 1999 and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2022.

The Power Struggle: Kynurenine Pathway Enzyme Knockouts and Brain Mitochondrial Respiration

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 5, May 2025.
Kynurenine pathway enzyme knockouts impair mitochondrial respiration. The deletion of kynurenine aminotransferase genes leads to significant impairment of mitochondrial respiration and ATP production, highlighting the critical role these enzymes play in cellular energy metabolism.

Proteome Reprogramming and Acquired Stress Tolerance in Potato Cells Exposed to Acute or Stepwise Water Deficit

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 48, Issue 5, Page 2875-2894, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Water deficit negatively impacts crop productivity and quality. Plants face these challenges by adjusting biological processes and molecular functions according to the intensity and duration of the stress. The cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum) is considered sensitive to water deficit, thus breeding efforts are needed to enhance its ...

Safety evaluation of the food enzyme acetolactate decarboxylase from the genetically modified Bacillus subtilis strain DP‐Ezz65

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2025.
Abstract The food enzyme acetolactate decarboxylase (α‐acetolactate decarboxylase; EC 4.1.1.5) is produced with the genetically modified Bacillus subtilis strain DP‐Ezz65 by Genencor International B.V. The genetic modifications do not give rise to safety concerns. The production strain meets the requirements for the qualified presumption of safety (QPS)

Expanding the Substrate Scope of C−N Lyases by Homologue Discovery

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 26, Issue 7, April 1, 2025.
A homology‐based strategy is employed to identify and biochemically characterize 13 enzymes homologous to ethylenediamine‐N,N‐disuccinic acid (EDDS) lyase. Several homologues exhibit a broadened substrate scope, accepting L‐amino acids for the enantioselective hydroamination of fumarate to produce the corresponding aminopolycarboxylic acids.

Quorum Sensing Coordinates Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism to Optimize Public Goods Production in Pseudomonas fluorescens 2P24

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 12, March 27, 2025.
Pseudomonas fluorescens 2P24 utilizes a LasI/LasR‐type quorum sensing (QS) system, MupI/MupR, to regulate carbon and nitrogen metabolism for optimal production of secondary metabolites as public goods, including 2,4‐diacetylphloroglucinol, mupirocin, and siderophores.

Natural pigments derived from plants and microorganisms: classification, biosynthesis, and applications

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 2, Page 592-614, February 2025.
Summary Pigments, as coloured secondary metabolites, endow the world with a rich palette of colours. They primarily originate from plants and microorganisms and play crucial roles in their survival and adaptation processes. In this article, we categorize pigments based on their chemical structure into flavonoids, carotenoids, pyrroles, quinones ...
