Cardiomyopathy in a c.1528G>C Hadha mouse is associated with cardiac tissue lipotoxicity and altered cardiolipin species

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research
Long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (LCHADD) is a metabolic disorder caused by the loss of LCHAD enzymatic activity in the α-subunit of the trifunctional protein (TFPα), leading to impaired fatty acid oxidation (FAO).

Preliminary Evaluation of a Novel Lupus Anticoagulant Activity Assay Unaffected by Anticoagulants

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
A novel one‐step lupus anticoagulant (LA) assay based on the LA‐sensitivity ratio (LA‐SR) was developed to simplify diagnostic testing and reduce potential interference from anticoagulants. The LA‐SR method showed good agreement with guideline‐based LA testing (dRVVT and/or LA‐sensitive APTT) for the detection of LA and demonstrated limited influence ...

Cardiolipin and mitochondrial carriers

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 2009
Members of the mitochondrial carrier family interact with cardiolipin (CL) as evident from a variety of functional and structural effects. CL stabilises carrier proteins on isolation with detergents, with the P(i) carrier as the prime example. CL is required for transport in reconstituted vesicles, prime examples are the P(i)- and ADP/ATP carrier (AAC).

A Refractory Leg Skin Ulcer Associated With Multiple Myeloma Successfully Treated With Plasma Exchange, Lenalidomide, and Dexamethasone

open access: yesJEADV Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant plasma cell disorder that primarily presents with CRAB symptoms (calcium elevation, renal failure, anemia, and bone abnormalities). In rare cases, MM manifests with systemic complications like skin ulcers, which present management challenges. Here, we report a 78‐year‐old Japanese man with MM and refractory

Effect of cardiolipin on the lamellarity and elongation of liposomes hydrated in PBS

open access: yes
Lamellarity and shape are important factors in the formation of vesicles and determine their role in biological systems and pharmaceutical applications. Cardiolipin (CL) is a major lipid in many biological membranes and exerts a great influence on their ...

Linoleic acid supplemention of Barth syndrome fibroblasts restores cardiolipin levels: implications for treatment

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2003
The object of this study was to investigate whether the levels of cardiolipin in cultured skin fibroblasts of patients with Barth syndrome (BTHS) can be restored by addition of linoleic acid to growth media.

SIRT3 and SIRT5 regulate the enzyme activity and cardiolipin binding of very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
SIRT3 and SIRT5 have been shown to regulate mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation but the molecular mechanisms behind the regulation are lacking. Here, we demonstrate that SIRT3 and SIRT5 both target human very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD), a ...

Diagnosis and management of neutropenia in adults: Expert guidance

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Severe neutropenia can result from decreased production of neutrophil precursors in the bone marrow, as in the case of severe congenital neutropenia, or from increased utilization of neutrophils or their accelerated destruction as for drug‐induced neutropenia or autoimmune neutropenia. Severe chronic neutropenia increases susceptibility to bacterial or

Structure of an Inner Membrane Protein Required for PhoPQ-Regulated Increases in Outer Membrane Cardiolipin

open access: yesmBio, 2020
The Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium PhoPQ two-component system is activated within the intracellular phagosome environment, where it promotes remodeling of the outer membrane and resistance to innate immune antimicrobial peptides.

The physicochemical properties of cardiolipin bilayers and cardiolipin-containing lipid membranes

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 2009
In this review article, we summarize the current state of biophysical knowledge concerning the phase behavior and organization of cardiolipin (CL) and CL-containing phospholipid bilayer model membranes. We first briefly consider the occurrence and distribution of CL in biological membranes and its probable biological functions therein. We next consider
