Neuroactive steroids in depression and anxiety disorders: Clinical studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Certain neuroactive steroids modulate ligand-gated ion channels via non-genomic mechanisms. Especially 3 alpha-reduced pregnane steroids are potent positive allosteric modulators of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA(A)) receptor.

Gymnema sylvestre: Bioactive constituents, health benefits, and emerging applications in nutraceuticals and functional foods

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Gymnema sylvestre (Retz.) R.Br. ex‐Schult., commonly known as “gurmar” or “sugar destroyer,” belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is traditionally used in Ayurveda for diabetes management. This review synthesizes ethnomedicinal evidence with contemporary pharmacological studies, to evaluate the therapeutic properties and mechanistic actions ...

The Na+/K+-ATPase: A potential therapeutic target in cardiometabolic diseases

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2023
Cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) are a direct consequence of modern living and contribute to the development of multisystem diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus (DM). CMD has reached epidemic proportions worldwide.

Bufalin Inhibits Melanoma Progression and Endothelial Angiogenic Phenotypes via AKT Signaling

open access: yesCancer Reports, Volume 9, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Bufalin (BF) exhibits anti‐tumor activity in many tumor types. However, there are few reports on BF in melanoma, and its pharmacological effects have not yet been elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of BF on melanoma and angiogenesis and to explore its possible mechanism.

Neurocardiology: Brain–Heart Interactions in the Heart

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2026.
The heart and brain maintain systemic homeostasis through bidirectional communication involving neural, biochemical, and mechanical pathways. Dysregulation of these pathways contributes to a spectrum of conditions involving heart–brain interactions, including Takotsubo syndrome, the epileptic heart, stroke–heart syndrome, heart failure, cardiac ...

Evolutionary insights into Na+/K+-ATPase-mediated toxin resistance in the Crested Serpent-eagle preying on introduced cane toads in Okinawa, Japan

open access: yesBMC Ecology and Evolution
Prey species often develop toxic chemical defenses against predators, prompting predators to evolve traits that counteract these toxins. A prime example of this evolutionary arms race involves resistance to lethal cardiotonic steroids, which is ...

Response Surface Method‐Optimized Microwave‐Assisted Extraction and LC–MS/MS Profiling of Bioactive Compounds Wild Edible Arisaema schimperianum Tuber

open access: yesSEPARATION SCIENCE PLUS, Volume 9, Issue 9, September 2026.
Response surface optimization identified 60% microwave power and 40 s as a balanced condition for recovering bioactive compounds from Arisaema schimperianum tuber. LC–MS/MS profiling revealed diverse metabolites, while freeze‐drying best preserved thermolabile compounds, highlighting an effective strategy for maximizing extraction efficiency and ...

Evaluation of Anti-Inflammatory Activity of the New Cardiotonic Steroid γ-Benzylidene Digoxin 8 (BD-8) in Mice

open access: yesCells
Cardiotonic steroids are known to bind to Na+/K+-ATPase and regulate several biological processes, including the immune response. The synthetic cardiotonic steroid γ-Benzylidene Digoxin 8 (BD-8) is emerging as a promising immunomodulatory molecule ...

The Trade-off Between Dietary Salt and Cardiovascular Disease; a role for Na/K-ATPase signaling?

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2014
It has been postulated for some time that endogenous digitalis-like substances, also called cardiotonic steroids (CTS), exist, and that these substances are involved in sodium handling.

DHCR24 Alleviates DNA Damage in Senescent Vascular Endothelial Cells via ENKUR/Ca2+ Signaling

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 9, September 2026.
In senescent vascular endothelial cells, DHCR24 deficiency triggers ENKUR‐dependent Ca2+ overload, which in turn induces endoplasmic reticulum stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, ultimately exacerbating oxidative stress and DNA damage. ABSTRACT DNA damage is considered one of the major contributors to aging.
