Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

The M, E, and N structural proteins of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus are required for efficient assembly, trafficking, and release of virus-like particles [PDF]
Copyright @ 2008 American Society for Microbiology. The production of virus-like particles (VLPs) constitutes a relevant and safe model to study molecular determinants of virion egress.

This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

A cytosolic factor mediating membrane recruitment of AP-1 clathrin adaptors [PDF]
Transport of cargo within the endocytic and secretory pathway is generally mediated by coated vesicles. These vesicles are formed through the recruitment of cytosolic coat proteins to the donor membrane that act as a scaffold to form coated buds and ...

De novo transcriptome analysis of the excretory tubules of Carausius morosus (Phasmatodea) and possible functions of the midgut 'appendices'. [PDF]
The Malpighian tubules are the insect excretory organs, responsible for ion and water homeostasis and elimination of nitrogenous wastes. Post-genomic assays suggest they also metabolize and detoxify xenobiotic compounds and have antimicrobial properties.

The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

The association of shiga-like toxin with detergent-resistant membranes is modulated by glucosylceramide and is an essential requirement in the endoplasmic reticulum for a cytotoxic effect [PDF]
Receptor-mediated internalization to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and subsequent retro-translocation to the cytosol are essential sequential processes required for the productive intoxication of susceptible mammalian cells by Shiga-like toxin-1 (SLTx).

Developmental Changes in Hepatic Organic Cation Transporter OCT1 Protein Expression from Neonates to Children [PDF]
Organic cation transporter 1 (OCT1) plays an important role in the disposition of clinically important drugs, and the capacity of OCT1 activity is presumed to be proportional to the protein expression level in organ tissues. Knowledge of OCT1 protein expression in children, especially neonates and small infants, is currently very limited.
