Single-Cell Visualization Deep in Brain Structures by Gene Transfer

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2020
A projection neuron targets multiple regions beyond the functional brain area. In order to map neuronal connectivity in a massive neural network, a means for visualizing the entire morphology of a single neuron is needed.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Humanized Stem Cell Models of Pediatric Medulloblastoma Reveal an Oct4/mTOR Axis that Promotes Malignancy

open access: yes, 2019
Medulloblastoma (MB), the most frequent malignant childhood brain tumor, can arise from cellular malfunctions during hindbrain development. Here we generate humanized models for Sonic Hedgehog (SHH)-subgroup MB via MYCN overexpression in primary human ...

PI5P Triggers ICAM-1 Degradation in Shigella Infected Cells, Thus Dampening Immune Cell Recruitment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Shigella flexneri, the pathogen responsible for bacillary dysentery, has evolved multiple strategies to control the inflammatory response. Here, we show that Shigella subverts the subcellular trafficking of the intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1),

Detecting global and local hierarchical structures in cell-cell communication using CrossChat

open access: yesNature Communications
Cell-cell communication (CCC) occurs across different biological scales, ranging from interactions between large groups of cells to interactions between individual cells, forming a hierarchical structure.

Structural and Energetic Evidence Supports the Non-Covalent Phosphate Cyclization by the Class II Phospholipase D from Loxosceles intermedia

open access: yesToxins
Phospholipase D (PLD) enzymes from Loxosceles spider venom mediate envenomation pathology by cleaving phospholipid headgroups. We revisited the crystal structure of Loxosceles intermedia PLD (PDB: 3RLH) to evaluate two alternative mechanisms—covalent and

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

The Diversification of Cell Death and Immunity: Memento Mori.

open access: yes, 2019
Why do cells have so many ways to die? Why does "cellular suicide" exist at all? In the war against pathogens and rogue cells, organisms developed cellular suicide as a last resort. Fighting an evolutionary arms race, cell death pathways have adapted and

Nanoscale-Textured Tantalum Surfaces for Mammalian Cell Alignment

open access: yesMicromachines, 2018
Tantalum is one of the most important biomaterials used for surgical implant devices. However, little knowledge exists about how nanoscale-textured tantalum surfaces affect cell morphology.
