Filtration of micropolar liquid through a membrane composed of spherical cells with porous layer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This paper considers membranes of globular structure in the framework of the cell model technique. Coupled micropolar and Brinkman-type equations are used to model the flow of micropolar fluid through a spherical cell, consisting of solid core, porous layer and liquid envelope. The solution is obtained in analytical form.

Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activities of Chlorogenic Acid Against Yersinia enterocolitica

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Nowadays, developing new and natural compounds with antibacterial activities from plants has become a promising approach to solve antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria. Chlorogenic acid (CA), as a kind of phenolic acid existing in many plants, has

Enhanced drug uptake on application of electroporation in a single-cell model [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Electroporation method is a useful tool for delivering drugs into various diseased tissues in the human body. As a result of an applied electric field, drug particles enter the intracellular compartment through the temporarily permeabilized cell membrane.

Measuring Oxygen, Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Sulfide Diffusion Coefficient and Solubility in Nafion Membranes [PDF]

open access: yesElectrochimica Acta, 54(27), 6850-6860, 2009, 2011
A Devanathan-Stachurski type diffusion cell made from a fuel cell assembly is designed to evaluate the gas transport properties of a proton exchange membrane as a function of cell temperature and gas pressure. Data obtained on this cell using the electrochemical monitoring technique (EMT) is used to estimate solubility and diffusion coefficient of ...

Effects of aquaporin-lipid molar ratio on the permeability of an aquaporin Z-phospholipid membrane system.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Aquaporins are water-permeable membrane-channel proteins found in biological cell membranes that selectively exclude ions and large molecules and have high water permeability, which makes them promising candidates for water desalination systems.

Blue Light Enhances Fluoride Anticariogenic Activity against Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesBiophysica, 2022
Previous studies have shown that sub-lethal exposure of blue light caused increased bacterial cell membrane permeability. We hypothesized that combining blue light exposure with other antibacterial agents may increase their efficacy.

Effect of MA01 rhamnolipid on cell viability and expression of quorum-sensing (QS) genes involved in biofilm formation by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
A group of biosurfactants, called rhamnolipids, have been shown to have antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Here, we examined the effect of rhamnolipid biosurfactants extracted from Pseudomonas aeruginosa MA01 on ...

A Barrier to Entry: Examining the Bacterial Outer Membrane and Antibiotic Resistance

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
Gram-negative bacteria can resist antibiotics by changing the permeability via their outer membrane. These bacteria have a complex cell envelope that incorporates an outer membrane separating the periplasm from the external environment.

Antibacterial Activity of Bifidobacterium breve Against Clostridioides difficile

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2019
Bifidobacterium breve (YH68) is widely used in the fields of food fermentation and biomedicine. In this study, we explored the antibacterial activity of the cell free culture supernatant (CFCS) of YH68 against Clostridioides difficile ATCC 9689 (CD) by ...

Melting transitions in biomembranes [PDF]

open access: yesBBA - Biomembranes 1861 (2019) 183026, 2019
We investigated melting transitions in biological membranes in their native state that include their membrane proteins. These membranes originated from \textit{E. coli}, \textit{B. subtilis}, lung surfactant and nerve tissue from the spinal cord of several mammals.
