Sophistications of cell sorting
The self-sorting of early embryonic cells is mediated not only by pure differential adhesion but also involves other processes. Direct force measurements reveal the role of cell-cortical tension, whereas epithelial-wrapping dominates the sorting of enclosed mesenchymal cells.

Voronoi polygons are introduced as a suitable representation for a two-dimensional cell sheet. These polygons are defined in terms of a finite number of points, making numerical simulations tractable and yet allowing cells to change neighbors and their shape in response to deforming forces without leaving gaps in the tissue.

During the development of multicellular organisms, cell fate specification is followed by the sorting of different cell types into distinct domains from where the different tissues and organs are formed. Cell sorting involves both the segregation of a mixed population of cells with different fates and properties into distinct domains, and the active ...

Antibodies reacting to specific cell surface markers can be bound to magnetic beads and used to specifically capture cells exhibiting the marker. This approach allows the selective enrichment of specific cell subpopulations and as the methods are amenable to use in blood, tissue fluids and culture medium living cells can be recovered that can ...

Protein Targeting The sorting of proteins into appropriate compartments is vital for proper cell function. After its discovery 20 years ago, various potential roles for nascent chain-associated complex (NAC) in the specificity of intracellular protein sorting have been proposed. Until now, no clear phenotypes have been discovered.

Practicalities of Cell Sorting
Cell sorting is a technique commonly used in academic and biotechnology laboratories in order to separate out cells or particles of interest from heterogeneous populations. Cell sorters use the same principles as flow cytometry analyzers, but instead of cell populations passing to the waste of the instrument, they can be collected for further studies ...Cheetham, Mark +5 more

A role for fibronectin in cell sorting
Journal of Cell Science, 1984ABSTRACT A useful approach to the investigation of embryonic morphogenesis is the study of the factors that control cell movement in cell aggregates in organ culture. Previous studies, in which aggregates of embryonic chick heart ventricle tissue were paired in organ culture, supported the hypothesis that the associative behaviour is ...

The mechanics of cell sorting and envelopment
Journal of Biomechanics, 2000Aggregates of embryonic cells undergo a variety of intriguing processes including sorting by histological type and envelopment of cell masses of one type by another. It has long been held that these processes were driven by differential adhesions, as embodied in the famous differential adhesion hypothesis (DAH).

Cell Sorting of Young and Senescent Cells
2013Cellular senescence is the irreversible loss of proliferative potential and is accompanied by a number of phenotypic changes. First described by Hayflick and Moorhead in 1961, it has since become a popular model to study cellular aging. The replicative lifespan of human fibroblasts is heterogeneous even in clonal populations, with the fraction of ...
