Self-sorting of isotropic cells
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1970Abstract In the preceding paper (Goel et al., 1970), using a simple model which assumes (a) differential affinities between cells of different types, and, (b) local motility of cells, it was shown that, for a self-sorting system of isotropic cells, none of the absolutely stable configurations are the two-dimensional analogs of biologically ...

Voronoi polygons are introduced as a suitable representation for a two-dimensional cell sheet. These polygons are defined in terms of a finite number of points, making numerical simulations tractable and yet allowing cells to change neighbors and their shape in response to deforming forces without leaving gaps in the tissue.

Magnetic labeling and cell sorting
Journal of Immunological Methods, 1984Magnetic labeling by a magnetite-antibody conjugate has been combined with magnetic filtration (high gradient magnetic separation) to effect a rapid and efficient separation of a selected cell population from a suspension of single cells. Samples of more than 10(8) cells could be fractionated in about 5 min with complete recovery.

Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting
2007Flow cytometry and cell sorting are well-established technologies in clinical diagnostics and biomedical research. Heterogeneous mixtures of cells are placed in suspension and passed single file across one or more laser interrogation points. Light signals emitted from the particles are collected and correlated to entities such as cell morphology ...

Diverse cell types are known to contribute to pathology in inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Analyzing inflammatory disease-related alterations in gene expression in different cell types requires cell purification without influencing the gene expression profile.

The 1990’s have ushered in an era of commercially available high speed sorters. Long strides have been made in sorting rare cell populations, low frequency transfectants, and single cell deposition robotics along with all kinds of other methodologies take cells well beyond the sorter.
