Learning and evolution of altruistic preferences in the Centipede Game
Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2013Abstract Several studies show that evolution favors non-selfish preferences only if preference types are observable. We present a new evolutionary scenario applied to the Centipede Game, where we adopt self-confirming equilibrium to capture behavior. We show that altruism may be evolutionarily successful even if preferences are unobservable.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE THREE‐LEGGED CENTIPEDE GAME?
Journal of Economic Surveys, 2009Abstract In the last two decades, several frameworks have been proposed to analyze the question of whether common knowledge of rationality is sufficient to justify the play of backward induction (BI) in games of perfect information. Three strands of literature have addressed this issue: the literature on equilibrium refinements, the literature on ...

Population Dynamics of Centipede Game using an Energy Based Evolutionary Algorithm
Advances in Artificial Life, ECAL 2013, 2013In the context of Evolutionary Game Theory, we have developed an evolutionary algorithm without an explicit fitness function or selection function. Instead players obtain energy by playing games. Clonal reproduction subject to mutation occurs when a player’s energy exceeds some threshold.

Experimental Results on the Centipede Game in Normal Form: An Investigation on Learning
Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 1998We analyze behavior of an experiment on the centipede game played in the reduced normal form. In this game two players decide simultaneously when to split a pie which increases over time. The subjects repeat this game 100 times against randomly chosen opponents.

Iterated reasoning and welfare-enhancing instruments in the centipede game
Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2010Abstract This paper investigates the effectiveness of two instruments designed to defer termination in the centipede game: an insurance against termination by the opponent, and an option to offer the opponent a bonus for not terminating the game. The rational prediction in both cases is passing until close to the end.

Cooperation in repeated interactions: A systematic review of Centipede game experiments, 1992–2016
Cooperation is a fundamental form of social interaction, and turn-taking reciprocity one of its most familiar manifestations. The Centipede game provides a formal model of such alternating reciprocal cooperation, but a backward induction (BI) argument ...

Exploring cooperation and competition in the Centipede game through verbal protocol analysis
The Centipede game is an abstract model of reciprocal relationships in which two individuals alternate in helping each other at relatively small personal cost.

Backwards induction in the centipede game
Analysis, 1999Imagine the following game, which is commonly called a ‘centipede game’. There is a pile of pound coins on the table. X and Y take it in turns to take either one or two coins from the pile, and they keep the coins they take. However, as soon as either of them takes two coins, the game stops, and the rest of the coins are cleared away.
