The Evolution of Cooperation in the Centipede Game with Finite Populations

Philosophy of Science, 2008
The partial cooperation displayed by subjects in the Centipede Game deviates radically from the predictions of traditional game theory. Even standard, infinite population, evolutionary settings have failed to provide an explanation for this behavior. However, recent work in finite population evolutionary models has shown that such settings can produce ...

Disequilibrium Behavior and Satisficing in the Centipede Game [PDF]

open access: possible, 1998
We reexamine subjects' behavior in the centipede game experiments studied by McKelvey and Palfrey (1992, Econometrica). We assume that players choose acts according to a modified version of case-based decision theory. The calibration results of this paper show that "satisficing" can explain the actual subjects' behavior surprisingly well.
