The aging brain and cerebrovascular reactivity

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2018
Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) is a measure of vascular response to a vasoactive stimulus, and can be used to assess the health of the brain vasculature. In this current study we used different analyses of BOLD fMRI responses to CO2 to provide a number of metrics including ramp and step CVR, speed of response and transfer function analysis (TFA).

Cerebrovascular reactivity in migraineurs

open access: yesHeadache Medicine, 2011
Cerebrovascular reactivity (CR) assessed by transcranial Doppler (TCD) has been evaluated among migraineurs with conflicting results. We assessed the CR using the breath holding index (BHI) among 228 migraineurs during ictal or interictal phase and 56 controls.

Neckties and Cerebrovascular Reactivity in Young Healthy Males: A Pilot Randomised Crossover Trial

open access: yesStroke Research and Treatment, 2011
Background. A necktie may elevate intracranial pressure through compression of venous return. We hypothesised that a tight necktie would deleteriously alter cerebrovascular reactivity. Materials and Methods.

Impaired Cerebrovascular Reactivity in Multiple Sclerosis [PDF]

open access: yesJAMA Neurology, 2014
Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) is an inherent indicator of the dilatory capacity of cerebral arterioles for a vasomotor stimulus for maintaining a spontaneous and instant increase of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in response to neural activation. The integrity of this mechanism is essential to preserving healthy neurovascular coupling; however, to our ...

Evaluation of cerebrovascular reactivity in chronic hepatitis C patients using transcranial color Doppler.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Hepatitis C viral (HCV) infection is associated with systemic inflammation and metabolic complications that might predispose patients to atherosclerosis, including cerebrovascular atherosclerosis.

Associations Between Intracranial Pressure Extremes and Continuous Metrics of Cerebrovascular Pressure Reactivity in Acute Traumatic Neural Injury: A Scoping Review

open access: yesNeurotrauma Reports
Cerebrovascular pressure reactivity plays a key role in maintaining constant cerebral blood flow. Unfortunately, this mechanism is often impaired in acute traumatic neural injury states, exposing the already injured brain to further pressure-passive ...

Exercise breaks prevent attenuation in cerebrovascular function following an acute bout of uninterrupted sitting in healthy children

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an acute bout of prolonged sitting with and without exercise breaks on cerebrovascular function in 7‐ to 13‐year‐old children.

The effect of age on cerebral blood flow responses during repeated and sustained stand to sit transitions

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2020
Introduction Aging is associated with impaired cerebrovascular blood flow and function, attributed to reduced vasodilatory capacity of the cerebrovascular network.

Factors affecting the determination of cerebrovascular reactivity

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, 2014
AbstractBackground and PurposeCerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), measures the ability of the cerebrovasculature to respond to vasoactive stimuli such as CO2. CVR is often expressed as the ratio of cerebral blood flow change to CO2 change. We examine several factors affecting this measurement: blood pressure, stimulus pattern, response analysis and ...

The dependence of CO2 cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) on caffeine. [PDF]

open access: yesImaging Neurosci (Camb)
Abstract Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) represents an important marker of brain vascular health, particularly in the context of small and large vessel diseases. However, an undesired feature of this measure is that there exist large variations in CVR values across individuals, which is mainly attributed to physiological factors.
