Natural Products from Mexican Medicinal Plants as Promising Trypanocidal Drugs

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 10, Issue 37, October 6, 2025.
Chagas disease (American Trypanosomiasis) is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. Worldwide it is one of the seventeen neglected tropical diseases. There is a need of new drugs. This review assesses the literature (2012‐2024) of secondary metabolites isolated from Mexican plants active against this parasite.

Association of caspase-1 polymorphisms with Chagas cardiomyopathy among individuals in Santa Cruz, Bolivia

open access: yesRevista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical
INTRODUCTION: Trypanosoma cruzi (Tc) infection is usually acquired in childhood in endemic areas, leading to Chagas disease, which progresses to Chagas cardiomyopathy in 20-30% of infected individuals over decades.

Clinical and echocardiographic predictors of mortality in chagasic cardiomyopathy - systematic review

open access: yesArquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, 2014
Diagnosis, prognosis and evaluation of death risk in Chagas cardiomyopathy still constitute a challenge due to the diversity of manifestations, which determine the importance of using echocardiography, tissue Doppler and biomarkers. To evaluate, within a

Serum Proteomic Signature of Human Chagasic Patients for the Identification of Novel Potential Protein Biomarkers of Disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Chagas disease is initiated upon infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. Among the health consequences is a decline in heart function, and the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this manifestation are not well understood. To explore the possible mechanisms,

Treatment with a New Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma Agonist, Pyridinecarboxylic Acid Derivative, Increases Angiogenesis and Reduces Inflammatory Mediators in the Heart of Trypanosoma cruzi-Infected Mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Trypanosoma cruzi infection induces an intense inflammatory response in diverse host tissues. The immune response and the microvascular abnormalities associated with infection are crucial aspects in the generation of heart damage in Chagas disease.

open access: yesPacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, Volume 48, Issue 10, Page 1157-1166, October 2025.
Distribution of distinct topographies and their relationship with NYHA classes and therapies. Each of the 111 dots represents a distinct PVC topography recorded in the 12L‐AECGs. Black dots represent PVC associated with patients classified as NYHA class I, green dots with NYHA class II, and yellow dots with NYHA class III.

Pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy: the role of coronary microvascular derangements

open access: yesRevista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical, 2013
There is ample experimental and clinical evidence of functional and structural microvascular abnormalities occurring in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy, possibly due to the inflammatory process and/or autonomic disturbances caused by Trypanosoma ...
