A new view into prokaryotic cell biology from electron cryotomography [PDF]
Electron cryotomography (ECT) enables intact cells to be visualized in 3D in an essentially native state to 'macromolecular' (~4 nm) resolution, revealing the basic architectures of complete nanomachines and their arrangements in situ.

SARS‐CoV‐2 targets mitochondria, exacerbating COVID‐19 pneumonia
Abstract figure legend Following entry into airway epithelial cells (AECs), SARS‐CoV‐2 releases its single‐stranded RNA into the cytoplasm, where it is translated into viral proteins. Several of these viral proteins localize to mitochondria and interact with key mitochondrial components.

Networked Chemoreceptors Benefit Bacterial Chemotaxis Performance
Motile bacteria use large receptor arrays to detect and follow chemical gradients in their environment. Extended receptor arrays, composed of networked signaling complexes, promote cooperative stimulus control of their associated signaling kinases. Here,

Forcing the issue:aromatic tuning facilitates stimulus- independent modulation of a two-component signaling circuit [PDF]
Two-component signaling circuits allow bacteria to detect and respond to external stimuli. Unfortunately, the input stimulus remains unidentified for the majority of these circuits.

ABSTRACT Spiders are renowned for their ecological versatility and silk‐based innovations in materials science, yet marine environments remain virtually uncolonized by this predominantly terrestrial lineage. A striking exception is the obligate intertidal spider genus Desis, whose members have evolved extraordinary physiological and behavioural ...

Role of glutathione redox state in oxygen sensing by carotid body chemoreceptor cells.
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the role of glutathione redox state in oxygen sensing by carotid body (CB) chemoreceptor cells. The basic structural traits of the carotid body CB arterial chemoreceptors are presented to understand the ...

Influence of low‐dose dopamine on exercise in fibrosing interstitial lung disease
ABSTRACT Fibrotic interstitial lung disease (FILD) is associated with dyspnoea and exercise intolerance. In other cardiorespiratory conditions, heightened carotid body (CB) chemoreflex sensitivity is associated with reduced exercise capacity. We tested the hypothesis that CB chemoreflex inhibition would improve exercise endurance time (EET) and reduce ...
