Progressive tauopathy disrupts breathing stability and chemoreflexes during presumptive sleep in mice

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2023
Rationale: Although sleep apnea occurs in over 50% of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) or related tauopathies, little is known concerning the potential role of tauopathy in the pathogenesis of sleep apnea.

Types of intrapartum hypoxia in the newborn at term with metabolic acidemia: A retrospective study

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 2022
Introduction In the most recent recommendations of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), a chapter was dedicated to the physiological approach and to the description of fetal mechanisms developed to respond to hypoxia.

Role of Peripheral Chemoreceptors on Enhanced Central Chemoreflex Drive in Nonischemic Heart Failure

open access: yes, 2023
© 2023. The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent disease in elderly population. Potentiation of the ventilatory chemoreflex drive plays a pivotal role in disease progression, at least in ...

Augmented Respiratory–Sympathetic Coupling and Hemodynamic Response to Acute Mild Hypoxia in Female Rodents With Chronic Kidney Disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
Carotid body feedback and hypoxia may serve to enhance respiratory–sympathetic nerve coupling (respSNA) and act as a driver of increased blood pressure.

Fetal autonomic responses inferred from heart rate variability during recurrent decelerations without acidosis—An observational study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gynecology &Obstetrics, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Recurrent fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations without acidosis are frequently observed during labor; however, the underlying autonomic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study explored fetal autonomic responses to recurrent decelerations using FHR and FHR variability (FHRV) parameters.

The Influence of CO2 and Exercise on Hypobaric Hypoxia Induced Pulmonary Edema in Rats

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
Introduction: Individuals with a known susceptibility to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) demonstrate a reduced ventilation response and increased pulmonary vasoconstriction when exposed to hypoxia.

Research Progress on Upper Airway Cough Syndrome

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Upper airway cough syndrome (UACS) has been identified as a significant contributor to chronic cough in various national guidelines. However, the complexity of its pathogenesis, the lack of clarity surrounding its diagnostic criteria, and its overlap with other etiologies of chronic cough present considerable challenges in both diagnosis and ...

Hypoxic breathing produces more intense hypoxemia in elderly women than in elderly men

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2022
Background: Brief hypoxic exposures are increasingly applied as interventions for aging-related conditions. To optimize the therapeutic impact of hypoxia, knowledge of the sex-related differences in physiological responses to hypoxia is essential.

The Relative Contributions of Arousal Presence and Arousal Intensity to Post‐Respiratory‐Event Ventilation in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
In obstructive sleep apnea, the breathing after each obstructive event is affected by cortical arousal. Across two cohorts (N = 1781 and N = 67), arousal presence raised post‐event ventilation by 17–30%Eupnea, with each intensity step adding 1–4%Eupnea, independent of chemoreflex drive.

Central Apneas Are More Detrimental in Female Than in Male Patients With Heart Failure

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2022
Background Central apneas (CA) are a frequent comorbidity in patients with heart failure (HF) and are associated with worse prognosis. The clinical and prognostic relevance of CA in each sex is unknown. Methods and Results Consecutive outpatients with HF
