Functionally refined encoding of threat memory by distinct populations of basal forebrain cholinergic projection neurons

open access: yeseLife
Neurons of the basal forebrain nucleus basalis and posterior substantia innominata (NBM/SIp) comprise the major source of cholinergic input to the basolateral amygdala (BLA).

Different cholinergic cell groups in the basal forebrain regulate social interaction and social recognition memory

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Social behaviour is a complex construct that is reported to include several components of social approach, interaction and recognition memory. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is mainly characterized by progressive dementia and is accompanied by cognitive ...

Optogenetic Activation of Cholinergic Enteric Neurons Reduces Inflammation in Experimental ColitisSummary

open access: yesCellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Background & Aims: Intestinal inflammation is associated with loss of enteric cholinergic neurons. Given the systemic anti-inflammatory role of cholinergic innervation, we hypothesized that enteric cholinergic neurons similarly possess anti ...

Natural Frequencies of Levodopa‐Induced Dyskinesia in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Abnormal involuntary movements, known as dyskinesias, are common complications of levodopa treatment in patients with Parkinson's disease and can significantly impair quality of life. The underlying pathophysiology remains unclear, and current therapeutic options are limited.

Corelease of acetylcholine and GABA from cholinergic forebrain neurons

open access: yeseLife, 2015
Neurotransmitter corelease is emerging as a common theme of central neuromodulatory systems. Though corelease of glutamate or GABA with acetylcholine has been reported within the cholinergic system, the full extent is unknown.

GDNF‐Enriched Small Extracellular Vesicle‐Loaded ROS‐Scavenging Hydrogel Promotes Neural Regeneration After Spinal Cord Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A glial cell line‐derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)‐enriched small extracellular vesicle‐loaded reactive oxygen species (ROS)‐scavenging hydrogel integrates sustained neurotrophic delivery with local modulation of oxidative and inflammatory stress after spinal cord injury. The composite hydrogel improves local vesicle retention, protects neural tissue,

Targeting a vulnerable septum-hippocampus cholinergic circuit in a critical time window ameliorates tau-impaired memory consolidation

open access: yesMolecular Neurodegeneration, 2023
Background Abnormal tau accumulation and cholinergic degeneration are hallmark pathologies in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the sensitivity of cholinergic neurons to AD-like tau accumulation and strategies to ameliorate ...

Bottom‐Up Engineering of a Human Neuromuscular System for Modeling Activity‐Induced Remodeling, Metabolic Stress, and Endothelial‐Modulated Excitability

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Using a bottom‐up approach, we engineered a human neuromuscular microchip to investigate distinct adaptive responses to neural stimulation and metabolic stress. Further integration of endothelial cells revealed their critical role in modulating neuromuscular excitability, establishing a comprehensive neurovascular‐muscular model.

Polypyrimidine tract binding protein knockdown reverses depression-like behaviors and cognition impairment in mice with lesioned cholinergic neurons

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2023
Background and objectivesDepression is a common comorbidity of dementia and may be a risk factor for dementia. Accumulating evidence has suggested that the cholinergic system plays a central role in dementia and depression, and the loss of cholinergic ...

Gonadotropin‐Inhibitory Hormone (GnIH) and Its Receptor GPR147 Mediates Acute Stress‐Induced Activation of the Locus Coeruleus‐SAM Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gonadotropin‐inhibitory hormone (GnIH, also known as RFamide‐related peptide‐3, RFRP‐3) is a hypothalamic neuropeptide that regulates vertebrate reproduction via its receptor GPR147. Although GnIH is known to mediate stress‐induced reproductive suppression, its role in broader stress responses remains unclear.
