Polyneuropathy secondary to ciguatoxin poisoning
The Italian Journal of Neurological Sciences, 1988Following ingestion of marine fish in Thailand this patient complained of gastrointestinal and neurological disturbances, marked by severe, mainly motor, demyelinating polyneuropathy, which worsened on her return to Italy a few days later. The clinical pattern, electromyography, cerebrospinal fluid test and sural nerve biopsy by electronmicroscopy ...

Total Synthesis of Ciguatoxin CTX3C
Science, 2001More than 20,000 people suffer annually from ciguatera seafood poisoning in subtropical and tropical regions. The extremely low content of the causative neurotoxins, designated as ciguatoxins, in fish has hampered the isolation, detailed biological studies, and preparation of anti-ciguatoxin antibodies for detecting these toxins.

Two interchangeable forms of ciguatoxin
Toxicon, 1984Ciguatoxin, the principal toxin responsible for ciguatera, isolated from moray eel viscera, has been separated into two distinct components by alumina chromatography. A series of chromatographies showed that the two components are interchangeable. This proves that ciguatoxin is a single molecular entity.

Ciguatoxin reduces larval survivability in finfish
Toxicon, 1999Ciguatoxins are lipophilic polyether toxins which concentrate in the viscera and flesh of coral reef associated finfish (Hessel et al., 1960). In this study, we quantify the adverse effects of ciguatoxin on fish embryos by microinjection into the egg yolk of medaka (Oryzias latipis) embryos. Embryos microinjected with 0.1-0.9 pg/egg (ppb) of ciguatoxin

Ciguatoxins are potent ichthyotoxins
Toxicon, 1992The ciguatoxins are lipid soluble polyether compounds which have structural and biochemical features in common with the brevetoxins. Pure ciguatoxin-1, ciguatoxin-2 or brevetoxin-2 added to water containing Gambusia affinis induced similar signs, including pronounced opercular movement and uncoordinated swimming preceding death. The estimated LD50s (48

Ciguatera is a disease caused by the consumption of fishes from tropical and subtropical waters that have accumulated lipophilic sodium channel activator toxins known as ciguatoxins (CTXs) to levels sufficient to cause human poisoning. Consumption of these temperature-stable, orally active polycyclic ether compounds leads to the activation of neuronal ...

Optimization of ciguatoxin extraction method from blood for Pacific ciguatoxin (P-CTX-1)
Toxicon, 2007Ciguatera diagnosis relies on clinical observations associated with a recent consumption of fish. Although needed, direct confirmation of exposure in subjects showing ciguatera disease symptoms is currently unavailable. We previously reported that ciguatoxins were measurable in the blood of mice exposed to extracts of Pacific ciguatoxins isolated from ...

Recovery of ciguatoxin from fish flesh
Toxicon, 1993A mouse bioassay, validated for the quantification of ciguatoxin in up to 20 mg of ether extract from fish flesh, revealed that 63 +/- 14% of spiked ciguatoxin was recovered using a standard extraction procedure. Except for extracts from the least toxic of ciguateric fish (0.1-0.5 nmol ciguatoxin-1/kg fish), signs in mice of intoxication by ciguatoxin (

Analytical challenges to ciguatoxins
Current Opinion in Food Science, 2017Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a form of food poisoning caused by consumption of varieties of toxic ciguatera fish species from tropical and subtropical waters. In the present review, significant features and perspective of LC/MS methods for CTXs as confirmatory methods are reviewed on the discussion for one of the best LC/MS/MS method reported by ...
