A porous prolate-spheroidal model for ciliated micro-organisms [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
A fluid-mechanical model is developed for representing the mechanism of propulsion of a finite ciliated micro-organism having a prolate-spheroidal shape.

Depletion of the RNA‐Editing Enzyme ADAR1 Invigorates the Antitumor Immunity of NK Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ADAR1 is upregulated in NK cells from melanoma patients, impairing their function. Its loss enhances NK cell tumor infiltration and cytotoxicity in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, ADAR1 deficiency destabilizes CD38 mRNA to reduce its expression, thereby increasing NK cell mobility and killing, which nominates it as a therapeutic target for NK cell ...

Cell-wide arrangement of Golgi/RE units depends on the microtubule organization

open access: yesCell Structure and Function
We have previously shown that Golgi stacks and recycling endosomes (REs) exist as Golgi/RE units in sea urchin embryos. In this study, we showed that Golgi/RE units were scattered throughout the cytoplasm at early developmental stages but gathered to ...

The 1/N Expansion of Tensor Models Beyond Perturbation Theory

open access: yes, 2013
We analyze in full mathematical rigor the most general quartically perturbed invariant probability measure for a random tensor. Using a version of the Loop Vertex Expansion (which we call the mixed expansion) we show that the cumulants write as explicit ...

Restoring Iron Homeostasis via Smoothened Inhibition: A Novel Strategy Against Hearing Loss

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
. ABSTRACT Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) induced by noise or aminoglycoside antibiotics is a significant public health concern without any FDA‐approved pharmaceutical therapies. Dysregulation of iron homeostasis and its subsequently induced ferroptosis has increasingly been identified as a key mechanism underlying cochlear hair cell (HC) damage ...

CFAP410 has a bimodular architecture with a conserved surface patch on its N-terminal leucine-rich repeat motif for binding interaction partners

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
Cilia and flagella associated protein 410 (CFAP410) is a protein localized at the basal body of cilia/flagella and plays essential roles in ciliogenesis. Multiple single amino acid mutations in CFAP410 have been identified in patients.

Cis‐ and Trans‐Regulatory Factors Independently Shape Phenotypic Heterogeneity of Retinitis Pigmentosa

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A zebrafish model carrying an identical human RHO S334X allele reveals two independent genetic layers shaping retinitis pigmentosa (RP) severity: a protective 3‐bp cis‐regulatory insertion that attenuates transgene expression, and a dominant trans‐acting modifier that restores a severe phenotype.

Unexpected encounter with an intracameral cilium postcataract surgery

open access: yesThe Pan-American Journal of Ophthalmology
Background: Cataract surgery, a routine and highly successful ophthalmic intervention, is not immune to unexpected challenges. While complications are infrequent, their diverse nature necessitates a thorough understanding to ensure optimal patient ...

Kinesin‐Induced Buckling Reveals the Limits of Microtubule Self‐Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study shows that kinesin‐driven buckling induces extensive microtubule lattice damage that often exceeds intrinsic self‐repair and leads to filament failure. While curvature, motor motility, and force individually cause limited damage, their combination overwhelms repair.
