Development of Cost‐Effective and Highly Transparent Melamine Formaldehyde Resin Modified With Sodium Chloride for Enhancing Glossiness and Abrasion Resistance of Melamine Impregnated Paper

open access: yesPolymer Engineering &Science, EarlyView.
An eco‐friendly melamine‐formaldehyde was produced by the addition of sodium chloride as a modifier. Modified MF resin improved surface gloss and abrasion resistance of decorative paper and decreased the formaldehyde emission. Curing time of the MF resin decreased with the addition of sodium chloride.

Past, present and future of local crop evolution

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Promoting agrobiodiversity is a promising strategy for mitigating the negative effects of climate change on global food security. We highlight the central role evolutionary processes play in harnessing the potential of local crops by integrating genomics, archaeology, ethnobotany and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).

Hydrogen production from coffee pulp by dark fermentation

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2019
Abstract Coffee pulp (C.P.) is a waste of coffee production that needs to be controlled. Due to its high moisture and sugar content, a diagnostic study that characterizes the pulp was conducted and the potential for hydrogen production was evaluated. Subsequently, the kinetics of hydrogen production in a bioreactor were evaluated.

Climate requirements for cultivated Liberica coffee (Coffea liberica) and consequences for its use and development as a crop species

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The global coffee industry, supporting 25 million smallholder farmers, is vulnerable to climate change. Diversifying the coffee species portfolio beyond Arabica and robusta is a promising intervention. Liberica coffee could provide adaptive capacity, although its climate parameters for cultivation are poorly known.

Optimization of alkaline pretreatment of coffee pulp for production of bioethanol

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, 2014
The use of lignocellulosic raw materials in bioethanol production has been intensively investigated in recent years. However, for efficient conversion to ethanol, many pretreatment steps are required prior to hydrolysis and fermentation. Coffee stands out as the most important agricultural product in Brazil and wastes such as pulp and coffee husk are ...

The Hidden Costs of Coffee Production in the Eastern African Value Chains

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There is increasing recognition that significant hidden costs associated with agrifood systems are not reflected in market prices. Coffee is among the three most traded agricultural commodities in the world and supports the livelihoods of more than 30 million smallholder households.
